Kenneth Wayne Chartier, 73, of Collingwood, ON, passed away in his home on March 6, 2024 after losing a lengthy battle with kidney disease.
Ken was born on July 24, 1951 to Jean and Amie Chartier in Russel, Manitoba. In 1970 Ken decided to move to Ontario, with his mother and siblings following him soon after.
For many years he worked as a surveyor at Ainley Group, until accepting a role with the town of Wasaga Beach in 1993. In his last years, he was a supervisor in the public works department. He worked there for almost 30 years until his retirement in 2012.
Ken was a self-identified “Collector”. He enjoyed collecting antiques of all kinds as well as other unique odds and ends. He enjoyed going to auctions, small shops and markets. Ken spent a lot of time researching the Chartier genealogy tracing our lines back to France. He loved to share the stories of our ancestors and where we came from. Ken enjoyed going for long drives to see the scenery and bird watch, including taking pictures of his journeys. One of his favourite hobbies was fishing.
Ken had a unique personality and loved to joke around with people. He knew how to entertain his friends and family with wonderful meals at his home. He would always have something fun for his nieces and nephews to do at his place, including camping out back, complete with a TV and Nintendo. Ken’s family have enjoyed hearing stories from the other residents of his apartment building about him and how he will be missed.
Ken was predeceased by both of his parents and recently his sister Judy. He is survived by his brother Dave, sisters Anita and Tammy, nieces Nikki, Shaina, Chylene, and Kristy nephews Tristian, Brian and Josh, great nieces Aurora, and Kiera, and great nephews Jackson, Alexander, and Everest, and his unofficially adopted daughter Jennifer.
Ken did not wish to have a service following his death. His ashes will be laid to rest with his mother, in a beautiful field with amazing views of birds and other wildlife. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada in his honour.
A Letter from Ken
“I was born, I lived and died, therefore completing the cycle of life. I committed no serious crimes, harmed neither animal or human life. I lived a life of kindness, and tried to be friendly to all. But as life would have it, you do create enemies, upset people, make mistakes, etc – but don’t we all. I tried to make people laugh as much as possible and not to take life too seriously.
My passion was fishing, antiques and collecting (I WAS NOT A HOARDER). I loved giving a lot of stuff to people and sometimes tired to get some things back. Be careful what you part with. I may have came across as being smart and knowing many things, but that was just a ruse to cover up my shyness, awkwardness, and lack of a formal education. I had no one to tell me or show me what to say, how to say it or do it. Fortunately, my family and various friends help guide and shape my moral character to a point that I was tolerable. I was very insecure in life and felt I could never do things right. It frustrated me all my life.
If I had to live my life over, I sure would change a lot and do thing differently. But I would never change the people I loved and knew during my life on this earth. So to those still plowing on through time, I hope I made slight impression while I was alive. Value your friends and family the best you can and live a honest, true and kind life style, no matter how bad the rest of the world treats you.
Loved being part of your lives”
Ken Chartier
