Douglas Allen Rowlands
1953-2024
After following many trails in his life, Doug has gone home,
shortly after his 71st birthday. He was predeceased by his parents
Ruth (Crisp) and Hartley Rowlands. He leaves behind his loving wife
Mary Anne and their children Matthew (Janet), Nicole (John), Marcus.
He was known as Papa to Madison, Ethan, Owen, Hartley, Lily and Ella.
Doug was a beloved brother to Catherine, Susan, Stephen (Maryke), and
Lisa (Randy) and a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. And his
special fur baby, Bruin.
In life, Doug was a builder. Whether it was housing,
woodworking, problem solving or McIvering to make things work. He even
had his own Cable TV show while working at Cashway Building Supplies.
He certainly knew his way around a few building supply stores. Doug
was a finisher – whatever he started he finished even though he always
had at least 3 or 4 projects on the go at the same
time.
Doug was also an active community builder, volunteering
wherever he lived, he was a Coxswain, Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary,
Camp Committee Chair for Cobourg Reserve and volunteered for Port Hope
community policing to name a few. Recently in New Brunswick he was a
Past Chair of Lepreau LSD and served as Chair of the Regional
Recreation Committee; A Board member of Coastal Trail Inc.; a Board
member for Dial-A-Ride: a Warden in Warden Service of PLNGS; and as a
member of the Fundy Bay 50+ Club and Vice President of the Fundy Zone;
he was also asked to help the Federation of New Brunswick Senior
Citizens with organizing some clubs in Saint John.
Scouting was a way of life for Doug. His Scouting journey
started as a boy in Sea Scouts in Ajax, Ontario and he never left the
movement. He had paid his dues to the Fellowship of Baden-Powell
Guilds. Along the Scouting paths, Doug saw many thousands of children
in all 5 sections and gave many more thousands of hours in
volunteering as a Scouter, Service Teams, Councils (local, district,
regional, provincial and national), Jamborees, Beaverees, Cuborees,
Camporees and Mentor. Doug saw and understood and valued Scouting
training as a participant in all 5 sections for Woodbadge Part 1, 3
Woodbadge Part 11 training courses, and as a trainer on many Woodbadge
Part 1’s and Woodbadge Part 11’s as team member
and course leader. When he moved from Ontario to New Brunswick, he was
involved with the St. George Scouting group as a Cub Scouter and got
involved with the BP Guild. Doug was awarded The Bar to the Silver
Acorn for exceptional service to Scouting, awarded his 4th bead as a
trainer and gave more than 50 years of himself in service to his
communities through Scouting.
His family would like to thank all of the staff of 5AN at the
Regional hospital for their wonderful care and to those very special
friends, Sharon and Larry, who supported him.
Cremation has taken place. Please join us for a Celebration
of his Life. Tuesday evening, March 26th, from 6-8 pm at the Fundy Bay
50+ Club on Maces Bay Road.
