Martin, Maggi (Dillon)
Maggi Martin was born in 1952 in County Louth, Ireland. She was one of 7 children who were beloved by Rose and Mick Martin. As a child, she had many adventures in Ireland, prior to her journey to Canada when she was about 8 years old. Her father Mick owned a bar but wanted to raise his large family in a different environment, selling his business and moved his family to Wawa, Ontario. As a young girl in Wawa, Maggi rode a bike called Bessie and had many adventures all over town with her brothers and sisters. Subsequent to receiving her nursing degree at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Maggi temporarily moved back to Ireland to gain nursing experience. She returned to Canada, working as a full-time nurse in the Sudbury General Hospital. While living in Sudbury she had a child named Michael. She met her husband, Patrick Dillon from Hamilton. In that union, Patrick inherited a son, Michael, and Maggi inherited a daughter, Lianne. She relocated to Hamilton, Ontario in 1990 after they married. She took a job as a nurse at the Hamilton General Hospital in the CCU, where she helped many to regain their health. She became best friends with Lorna Koslowski and made many other friends including her next door neighbour Teresa Burgess. She was known to play Euchre with great enthusiasm, drinking wine and listening to country music. Dr. Hook was one of her favourites. She began to experience some health concerns in 1980s when she developed a lung condition. In 2014, she survived breast cancer. She transitioned her career from the General Hospital to the Emmanuel House in Hamilton. As a hospice nurse, she cared for many in their final months of life. Her retirement came in 2018 when she suffered a debilitating stroke and was resigned to a wheelchair. For 6 years, she and her beloved husband Patrick worked tirelessly together as they faced each new challenge with love, respect and resolve, until they faced their final day together when Maggi passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024. She is survived by her “man” Patrick, her son Michael, her daughter Lianne (Greg), Jacob (Hayley), Dillon and Jared (Nicole). She was deeply loved by her entire family, especially her “Party of five” sisters, 2 brothers, and her many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Her family will miss her more than any words could ever express. Please join our family as we celebrate Maggi’s life on Saturday March 9, 2024. A Visitation will be held at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 440 King St. E. Hamilton from 9:30am until the time of Funeral Mass at 11am. ** A live stream of the mass which can be viewed Internationally: stpats.online.church/ or on our Facebook page “St. Patrick’s Hamilton” Followed by a Celebration of Life Luncheon at LIUNA Station at 12pm.
