It is with broken hearts that the family of the late Ernest Turpin of St. Lawrence announces his passing. Ernest passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at the age of 81.
Leaving to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his son, Louie Turpin (Janet); daughters, Claudine Beaupertuis (Thaierry), Melanie Turpin (Raymond) and Leslie Turpin (Mark); grandchildren, Chloe, Theo, Liam, Maya, Jack and Isaac; sisters, Priscilla Briand, Sybil Turpin, Ann Marie Turpin and Myra Kelly (Ed); brothers, Phil Turpin, Bert Turpin (Viola), Pat Turpin (Joan) and Joe Turpin (Dorothy); his beloved havanese companion, Casper; plus a large circle of extended family and friends.
Ernest was predeceased by his wife, Anne-Marie Turpin; parents, Louis & Myra Turpin; sisters, Ursula and Nadine Turpin; and brother, Louie Turpin.
The Turpin family would like to offer a special thank you to the nurse practitioners, that took such great care of him, Suzanne Condon and Alisa Fowlow.
Ern was the third child of twelve, The “Gentle Giant” of the crew, who was known to many as “Big Ern.” From a very tender age he knew what hard work was all about. He spent many days fishing, farming, gardening, cutting, and hauling wood. He was known for his strength, kind heart, and patience.
Work was his life until he met his one and only love, Anne-Marie (Anna Mary). Together they built a humble life filled with love, laughter, happiness, and good food. The most treasured part of his life were his four children, along with his six adored grandchildren.
Ern found joy in many things especially at the stage mending traps and nets and having a yarn with his brothers and fellow fishermen. Being on the water was a big part of who he was, and the life he made. Despite his sea sickness, it was where he loved to be.
In his later years, sitting at the kitchen table, looking out at the harbour and the boats, brought him solace when he could no longer continue to do what he loved dearly.
Ern was a man of very few words, and quite funny in his own way. He had many unique expressions, some personally crafted, that no one would dare repeat! There is a lot more that could be said about the great man that Ern was, but in fine “No fuss” Ern fashion, we’ll end with his most favourite expression, “That’s good enough.”
