Max René Vernet Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Max René Vernet, 86, of Kingston on February 23, 2024.
Max was born in Belleville, France on May 28, 1938, to Marcel Vernet and Michelle Margotton. Max survived World War II due to the love and protection of Marcel and Michelle. Under difficult circumstances, Marcel and Michelle sought to ensure that their children received the best education possible. Max completed his education at the Sorbonne and made a voyage by ship to Canada. While teaching as an adjunct at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Max met Linda. Max and Linda traveled to Marrakesh, Morocco, where they taught and were soon happily married. After they returned to Canada, Max began teaching at Queen’s University in the Department of French in 1966. Max is survived by his stepmother Jacqueline Vernet, brothers Marc and Maurice, his sister Mireille Fontanel, his wife Linda, his sons Julien, Daniel, and Patrick, and his daughter Michele. He will be missed greatly by his eight loving grandchildren Xavier, Emma, Simon, Eva, Zoe, Olivia, Islene and Otis. A celebration of life will be held in Kingston, Ontario at a future date.
Max taught French literature for over thirty-three years at Queen’s University from 1966 to 1999. During his time at Queen’s Max served as head of the Department of French from 1978-1985. He finished his teaching career at the Royal Military College of Canada. In addition to his focus on French literature, Max was an always passionate and occasionally yellow-carded soccer player. He especially enjoyed playing the game with his friends and sometimes his sons at noon-hour at Queen’s and had a brief international stint as a player for A.S. Montchat in the 1980s at Stade Jules Verne in Lyon, France. Max also enjoyed writing, reading, listening to classical music, jokes, philosophical discussions about the nature of the universe, movies set in space such as 2001 and Star Wars, making weather predictions, and an annual struggle to design a squirrel-proof bird feeder.
