We are sad to say goodbye to our father, grandfather and husband, Hugh Parkes, who departed for calmer lakes on February 9, 2024 after having just turned 78 the previous week. Hughie will be remembered for his love of “dad jokes” and enjoying to engage with people and make them laugh. He was well liked by many, and made friends so easily. He was born in Manitoba, grew up in the Kenora area, raised his family in London, and spent the last 5 years living with his son (Ben) and family in Ennismore.
As a younger man, Dad had prowess in stock car races on both dirt track and ice in Kenora, and held a proven track record. He was blessed with an inherent ability as a talented marine mechanic who could fix and build just about anything. He built many of his own custom motorcycles, and wrenched on anything with an engine. He enjoyed driving truck, old cars, fishing, the Leafs, NASCAR and beating us at cribbage.
He is survived by his wife Judy, four brothers, Garry, George (Ingrid), Brian (Lynn), and Phillip. Children Rob Jongkind, Chris McCulloch, Dustin Parkes, (Rebecca), Reilly Parkes (Amanda) grandson Rowan, Benjamin Parkes (Carolyn) granddaughters Eleanor and Violet, daughter Patti Reid (Willy) grandchildren Lael, Ashley and Craig and a number of nieces and nephews.
In the past few years, he had suffered with a series of health issues resulting in major surgeries and endured pain daily but rarely complained. In our grief, we are mindful that his suffering is no more. He will be greatly missed.
Cremation has taken place. In the summer, we will hold a celebration of his life in London, and as per his wishes, will spread some ashes on Lake of the Woods, where he spent a lot of time fishing with his friends and family.
May the lakes be calm, the fish biting, and the laughter echo for eternity for you dad!
