Jose Luis Rodriguez Santana
Born January 28, 1968, in Matanzas Cuba, Jose passed away suddenly at his home in Oshawa, Ontario on February 11, 2024.
Jose’s love of family, generous spirit, laughter and kindness will be greatly missed by his partner, Carla Vanderheyden, his beloved daughter, Laura, his family and friends in both Cuba and Canada.
Jose was predeceased by his father Francisco. Jose is survived by his mother Digna and his three siblings; Elida, Maida and Francisco.
Jose was born and raised in Cuba. Growing up, Jose was nicknamed Matecoco (Coconut Tree) due to his tall stature of 6’6” and kept this nickname for the rest of his life. At age 18, Jose fought in the Angola Civil War as a Sargeant for the Cuban Army.
Jose spent many years as a DJ in Cuba at nightclubs and resorts prior to coming to Canada in March, 2015. Jose loved entertaining others and was always ready for a good time whether it was joking, making TikToks, or getting together for food and music, Jose’s generous contributions to the lives of those around him will truly be missed.
A funeral ceremony will be held in Cuba on February 24, 2024
A Canadian Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Nacido el 28 de enero de 1968 en Matanzas, Cuba, José falleció repentinamente en su casa de Oshawa, Ontario, el 11 de febrero de 2024.
El amor de José por la familia, el espíritu generoso, la risa y la amabilidad serán muy extrañados por mi, su esposa Carla Vanderheyden, su amada hija, Laura, su familia y amigos tanto en Cuba como en Canadá.
Su padre Francisco falleció primero. A José le sobrevive su madre Digna y sus tres hermanos; Elida , Maida y Francisco
José nació y creció en Cuba. Al crecer, José fue apodado Matecoco debido a su alta estatura de 6’6″ y mantuvo este apodo para el resto de su vida. A los 18 años, José luchó en la Guerra Civil de Angola como Sargento del Ejército de Cuba.
José pasó muchos años como DJ en Cuba en clubes nocturnos y resorts antes de llegar a Canadá en marzo de 2015. A José le encantaba entretener a los demás y siempre estaba listo para pasar un buen rato, ya sea bromeando, haciendo TikToks o reuniéndose para comer y escuchar música, Realmente extrañaremos las generosas contribuciones de José a las vidas de quienes lo rodean.
El Funeral se realizará en Cuba el 24 de febrero de 2024
