Obituary
Jason Edward Speers passed away at his home on January 31, 2024. He is survived by his beloved partner of ten years, Katie Gowrie, and his cherished family: parents Kevin and Mardy Lee Speers, sister Brittany and brother-in-law Miles Gidlow. He was loved by his grandparents (Helen, George, Ginger and Edward) and his aunts, uncles and cousins, along with his dear friends and the Gowrie family.
Jason was born in North York and grew up in Newmarket and Bradford, where he could be found playing hockey and making music. He spent treasured childhood summers at his family’s cottage on the lake in Parry Sound and at the family farm near Hockley Valley. Growing up, Jason often excelled at whatever he put his mind to, whether it was sports, music, school, or making friends wherever he went. He was a natural leader, from the time he assistant captained the Newmarket Redmen hockey team to more recently, as a Vice President at work. In his youth, he loved playing music with his bandmates of Red Mosquitos and The Rileys, and despite his little-known stage fright, he had an unforgettable stage presence.
After high school, Jason attended York University where he studied Economics. After working in banking and consulting, he began a long and productive career at Ontario Clean Water Agency, where his passion for his work and innovative ideas inspired many. He believed in contributing to his community and dreamt of making a difference, and he was particularly passionate about working with First Nations.
In his late twenties, he met the woman he would spend the rest of his life with, and they enjoyed many happy years together. They were fortunate to visit far-off places around the globe and spend summer weekends at the lake with family. They loved to stargaze up north and collect seashells while visiting his parents in Florida. When Katie and Jason weren’t on the move, they both loved being in the home they created together. They spent lazy afternoons and quiet nights talking about the books and music they loved, the dreams they had, and all of life’s big questions. Their shared love of nature, history and vintage stuff was part of what bonded them, along with a love for family and a desire to contribute to the world around them. When they were together, Jay often made the simplest outing feel like a grand adventure.
Jason had a quick wit and a ready laugh; he was known to deliver hilarious one-liners and sound advice, and he was a kind listening ear to friends and family. He was a talented musician, playing drums, guitar and piano among other instruments; and he had a beautiful singing voice that will be missed by many. Jason was also a natural athlete. He enjoyed playing hockey, golf, baseball, and even shuffleboard, whenever he got the chance. He loved crossword puzzles, checkers, Archie comics, his mother’s chicken soup, and stand-up comedy. And his curiosity about the world around him constantly led him to new hobbies and interests, like watch-collecting, foraging and growing vegetables.
Jason’s deep compassion for others fueled all he did. One weekend he found and rescued a hatchling snapping turtle while at the family lake. Before anyone could step in to offer ideas, Jason had created an elaborate mobile home for the baby turtle and took an afternoon off to drive it to the turtle hospital in Peterborough, where he was confident his charge would be well taken care of. He was patient and smart, often finding unique ways of putting complicated ideas into digestible bits, which made him a wonderful teacher, mentor and friend.
Jason is much missed and he’ll never be forgotten. His family hopes he’s sitting by the lake now, listening to the birds sing.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 from 1-4 p.m. at Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home. Stories to be told at 2 p.m.
