Peter Robert Russell passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, January 29, 2024, at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Walkerton, in his 83rd year. Beloved wife of Veronica for over 60 years, father of Jason (Beverly) of Formosa and Scott (Michele) of River Valley. Proud grandfather of Benjamin, Iris, Evelyn, Lacey, and great grandfather of Lux. He will be dearly missed by his brother Jim (Jill) Russell of Burlington, and remembered by his sisters-in-law Iris Rogerson, Gladys Elliott, the extended Elliot Family, all of Gateshead, England, and many nieces and nephews. Peter is predeceased by his parents James and Elsie Russell, mother and father-in-law Sam and Mary Jane Elliott, brother-in-law Joseph Elliott and sister-in-law Doreen Elliott.
A Geordie at heart; Peter was born in Gateshead, England where he joined the merchant marines, traveling the world as an apprenticing millwright. Peter met and married the love of his life, “Roni” and they emigrated to Canada in 1967, settling in Hespeler, Ontario. Peter was a proud tradesman, working at Budd Automotive for 34 years before retiring and moving to Walkerton in 2017. Peter’s passion for motorcycling took him across the UK, Canada and USA on the open road riding the latest and fastest sport bike. He was known for quick trips from Cambridge to Ottawa to enjoy a hamburger, because he could. Together with his bride, he enjoyed a pint of Guinness at the local pub, watching or reading about historical events, and cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs and Newcastle United football club. His retirement was enjoyed with his grandchildren with whom he adored and loved retelling stories of his glory days with a quick wit and British humour.
The family wants to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre in Walkerton for all their compassionate care shown to Peter. A special thank you to Dr. Amanda Wilhelm, your thoughtfulness and helpfulness over the last years, will be remembered.
To honour his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of life will be held at a later date.
