John Charles Lane
October 28, 1938 – January 19, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of John’s peaceful passing in the comfort and care of Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood. Born in Smith Falls to parents William Garfield Land and Alma Robertson (nee Humphries) Lane. Predeceased also by his sister Marlene Alma Grantham of Nova Scotia. John moved to Collingwood with his family at about age 10. He became a proud and skilled journeyman and worked at the Collingwood Shipyards until it closed and at Kaufman Furniture. John was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and very disappointed when his mobility prevented him from being with these friends and supporters at meetings. His July sobriety birthday was more important to him than his October birthday. John enjoyed spending time at the trailer at Fenelon Falls for many years, working with his hands, playing golf, watching curling and the Blue Jays. He spent many hours playing cards with friends and daily with his dad during the latter part of his life.
John was first married to Sheila Margaret (nee Pottage) Taylor and will be sadly missed by their children – daughter, Debbie Park (Ian) of Burlington along with their children Alastair and Marissa and by his son, John Lane (Lisa) of Durham and their children Alena and Braedan. John was remarried and predeceased by Marjorie Lillian (nee Croft ) Lane and step-dad to Debbie Cooper (deceased), Valerie Gravel (deceased), Gary Cooper (Mary Ann) and Edward Cooper (Sherry). From the Cooper family he was grandpa to 11 and great-grandpa or great-great grandpa to many more.
We would like to express our gratitude to the staff of the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital Emergency Department and the surgical floors for the compassionate care they provided while focussing on his wishes. To the staff if Campbell Hose Hospice, thank you for the compassion and comfort you provided John and his family. Thank you to the staff of Bay Haven Retirement Home for making the last years of his life longer and better than he would have liked to admit.
At John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Collingwood. For those those who wish to donate in John’s memory, please consider Donate | Hospice Georgian Triangle or Donations to Ontario South – Al-Anon Alateen – Ontario South
