Johannes Cunningham Obituary
“Jack” (Johannes) was born and raised in Hampton, NB. He moved to Saint John to attend Community College. As a young man, Jack worked at the dry dock and NBTel, making friends everywhere he went. It was with the Saint John Police Force that Jack finally settled into a 31-year career. Moving through a variety of roles including 11 years of service to the Ident Department, he was proud to work among colleagues and friends, eventually retiring from the force a Sergeant.
Jack’s passion for the great outdoors became a defining aspect of his life. A chance meeting while skating introduced him to his future wife, Pam. Their shared love for skating continued long after their marriage. They spent many hours gracefully blading side-by-side across various SJ area lakes.
Together, Jack and Pam nurtured a family with a deep appreciation for nature—embracing winter sports, summer adventures, and the joys of travel and gardening. Jack was up for any physical challenge, taking part in the Blue Knights, dragon boat races, canoeing, water-skiing, downhill skiing, golf, running, cycling and ice climbing. It was outside or at his hunting camp that Jack was happiest. He could birdwatch, hunt, fish, mow, shovel snow or split wood for hours.
Among Jack’s cherished memories were cycling in Holland with cousins and a memorable tour of Italy. Jack and Pam travelled and made new friends far and wide, spending several winters in Florida. Post-retirement, alongside Pam, he joined a group of friends for longer hikes and daily walks. It was with these cherished friends that he would play cards, bowl, hike the Fundy Trail and make his daily run to Tim Horton’s. On his final day, Jack enjoyed one last outing with walking group pals Jerry and Sandra – a testament to a life well-lived!
Jack’s family was at the core of his being. Daughters Lori Cunningham (Jeff Humphrey) and Johanna Gillis (James Marshall), along with grandchildren Aurianna (Jean), Keira (Tanner), Shea (Catherine), Eavan, Anna, Em, Drew, Sarah (Alex) and Kenneth brought immeasurable joy. Jack’s roots extended to his siblings Willie (Orith) of Israel, Ron (Eva) of Springfield, and sister Nancy (John, deceased) of Sus. In-laws Donna McCormick, Judy Montford (Bob), Carol Brien (Don), and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews completed his family. Jack is predeceased by his father Ernest Cunningham of Sus and his mother Johanna Cunningham (Korteweg) of Chaam, Netherlands.
As we bid farewell to Jack, let us celebrate a man whose life harmonized duty, passion, and familial devotion—a life echoing through adventure, laughter and love.
