Peacefully, after a brief illness, at his home in Tillsonburg surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, John Remi D’Hondt, passed away at the age of 81 years. Beloved husband and best friend of Barb Demarest and the Late Diane D’Hondt (2020) for 58 years. Proud and loving father of John D’Hondt (Anita) and Cristy D’Hondt (Shawn Burris) and Barb’s children Linda Kovacs (Louie), Cathy Garrison (Aaron) and Ron Demarest (Jill). Cherished grandfather of Ryan and Eric and Barb’s grandchildren Kristin (Kris), Kevin, Amanda, Kaitlin and Danielle. Dear brother of Christine Vermeersch and brother-in-law of Monica D’Hondt and Anita Geysens. John is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his daughter-in-law Sharon D’Hondt, brothers Marcel D’Hondt (Suzanne) and Alfons D’Hondt and brothers-in-law Joel Vermeersch and Roger Geysens. John was a tobacco and cattle farmer for many years and he was also employed at Imperial Leaf Tobacco for 25 years. John was also an avid gardener especially with his lawn. Friends and relatives will be received at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) on Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The Liturgical Service for John will be held in Ostrander’s Chapel on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 11:00 am with Father Seejo John officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Tillsonburg Cemetery. Memorial donations to VON – Sakura House would be appreciated by the D’Hondt family.
