Ted passed away on December 23, 2023 at age 93, after succumbing to complications as a result of a broken hip due to a fall.
Ted was born in Forest Hill, On. to Jean (nee Heeley) and Gordon Hann, the younger brother to Joan Sutton (Ray). He attended Earl Haig H.S. where he attained his senior matriculation, and after working for A&P Grocery store, landed his career job at Bell Canada as a Cable Repair Technician where he worked for over 30 years. He was married to “the love of his life”, Norma Catherine Walker in 1956. Ted was a committed family man, father to Diana Coutts (Scott, John), Julia Hann, David Hann (Brenda) and Victoria Gwyllt (Jim) and Grandfather to Ryan Gwyllt (Tara), Douglas Coutts (Pia), Angus Coutts, William “Bill”Hann, Daryl Hann (Josh) and Jacob “Jake”Hann. Ted loved cottaging at the family cottage on Clearwater Lake that he and Norma purchased in 1966. Here he enjoyed boating, waterskiing, discing, fishing, horseshoes and hiking. He served as an executive member of the Clearwater Lake Cottage Association for many years. Even into his 90’s Ted loved spending time at the lake.
Ted lived in Willowdale for over 30 years. He was involved with the United Church, Couples Club, bowling leagues, travelling to South Carolina, golfing and bike riding while bringing up 4 children. After retiring from Bell Canada in 1985, he and Norma moved to Peterborough where he led a very long, active and enjoyable retirement with Norma, his spouse of 62 years. In Peterborough, he was an active member of the Bell Pioneers; Peterborough Senior Games; Peterborough Horseshoe Club; and Activity Haven for cards and shuffleboard. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed trying his luck at the casino and played billiards at the house, once per week with his buddies. Ted was known for his hat collection that covered the walls of the games room. His love for golf had him volunteering at the Bell Canadian Open for many years. He and Norma loved to travel, taking a trip to Europe, snowbirding with their travel trailer to Florida(12 yrs) and Texas (5 yrs), cruising to Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean. His love for the cottage and travelling also encouraged his hobby of photography and a camera collection. He continued to live in Peterborough after Norma’s passing in 2018. With Norma no longer with him for support, a hip replacement in 2020 and the Covid Pandemic, travel came to a halt with the exception of his last International trip to Sweden to visit his Granddaughter in 2018. In April 2022, After 37 years in Peterborough, Ted moved to the Gravenhurst Manor Retirement Home, where he continued to enjoy billiards, playing cribbage (a favourite activity for family visits) and going on outings down to Clearwater Lake.
Ted was a very active man his whole life and loved sports. In his later years he loved to watch sports on TV, especially tennis, golf and hockey and became an avid reader. Ted was always up for trying anything new, including Tree Trekking in his mid 80’s. He had a happy disposition, loved family get togethers and had quick witted humour right up until his passing. He loved to eat and was always up for ice cream no matter the season.
Ted leaves behind his 4 children, 6 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, friends and saw many friends and family members predecease him at the good age of 93.
Ted loved life and family and will be missed by all. As per Ted’s request, a private family dinner will be held at a date yet to be determined.
