Alwyn “Andy” Andrews of Fredericton, NB passed away
at the Pine Grove Nursing Home on January 4, 2024. Born in
Winterton, NL, he was the son of the Late Esau and Selena (Hiscock)
Andrews.
Andy grew up with a big family is a small fishing village on
the coast of Newfoundland, later moving to St. John’s where
he would join the cadets and begin his journey with the Royal Canadian
Air Force. Andy retired, as a Warrant Officer, after 28
years.
Anyone who knew Andy knew how proud he was of his home and
visited there often over the years. Andy made his way to the Valley
(CFB Greenwood) when he was only 21 years old. One weekend he went
home with his buddy to Wolfville for the weekend and met the love of
his life, Susie. Andy and Susie would have 68 wonderful
years together. They traveled to Germany during
Andy’s time in the service and visited many countries during
their years there. When it was time to come back to Canada
they lived in Chatham, NB then back to Greenwood, NS to settle
down. Andy and Susie spent a lot of their time in Wolfville
with their family on Orchard Avenue, enjoying Evangeline Beach and
Lumsden’s Dam for picnics and a swim with all his nieces and
nephews (and there were a lot!) taking trips to Medfield, MA and St.
John’s whenever they could. After many years of
trying to start their own little family, Andy and Susie were blessed
with their only child, Mary Sue, who came to join the family in
1975. After retiring from the Air Force in 1981, Andy and
the family moved to Wolfville where he worked a Supervisor at the
Michelin Tire plant in Waterville for many years. Andy
didn’t like to be idle so after retiring from Michelin he
began his time as a Commissionaire. I think he liked that
job the best because he got to spend his days at the Wade’s
parking lot in Wolfville chatting with all the folks in town, students
from Acadia and family doing their daily errands. He loved
being around people. He also loved to sing and joined the
Dukes of Kent (barbershop choir) in the mid ‘80’s.
He was a social butterfly, even at the Veteran’s Care Centre
in Moncton, when he first entered the nursing home. When
Mary Sue had their granddaughter Lena in 2006, Andy and Susie moved to
Riverview, NB to be close to them. He joined the Riverview
Legion and enjoyed his time selling poppies and playing darts with the
Vet’s. But Andy’s pride and joy was
Lena, he spent everyday finding a way to make her happy.
Lena was his world, no matter how he was feeling he always lit up the
room when she walked in and everyone else would
disappear.
Andy had a long, beautiful life. He leaves behind
the values and beliefs that family is the most important thing in life
and to stay positive and not take life too seriously always saying
“20 years from now you won’t know a thing about
it”.
He will be dearly missed by his wife Ruby; daughter Mary Sue
(Wood) and her partner Kevin (Dudka); granddaughter Lena, his sisters
in law, Kathleen (Isnor) and Roberta (Weir) and many beloved nieces
and nephews. Besides his parents Andy was predeceased by his
brothers Alexander, William, Ralph, Wilson, Cyril and Roy and a sister
Clara (Garland).
Respecting his wishes cremation has taken place at
Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine
Road, Riverview (506-869-2007). A service to celebrate his
life will be held at White’s Funeral Home in Kentville, NS
on Saturday, January 13th at 1pm.
Donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated
by his family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cobbsfuneralhome.ca
