Denise Dick Herr Obituary
It is with profound sadness that the family announces the death of Denise Dick Herr, 74, of Lacombe, Alberta. She was the much-loved Professor of English Literature Emeritus of Burman University in Lacombe.
Born in Atascadero, California on August 4, 1949, she grew up in Connecticut, New York, and the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. She was a consummate reader of books all her life and that hobby led to her later profession as a Professor of English Literature. Denise attended John Nevins Andrews Elementary School in Takoma Park, MD, Takoma Academy in the same town, Andrews University in Michigan for her BA in English Literature, her MA from La Sierra University in Riverside, CA, writing a thesis on William Faulkner, and her PhD from Ateneo University in Manila, The Philippines, with a dissertation on metaphor in the biblical Book of Job. She taught English literature at what is now Burman University in Lacombe from 1974 to 1977, and again from 1985 to 2015, when she retired, remaining at her beautiful home on Lake Elizabeth in Lacombe until her passing on Dec. 31, 2023.
In 1977 she married Larry Herr and went with him to teach at the Adventist University of the Philippines near Manila from 1978 to 1984. During those years her son, Garrick Herr, was born. She also spent several summers with Larry on archaeological excavations in Jordan and a year of scholarly research in Jerusalem, Israel. Garrick went along everywhere, as well. A dual citizen of both the United States and Canada, she long considered herself a Canadian with a special love for the US, where all members of her family still reside.
Denise loved to travel, living and studying in England (Newbold College); The Philippines (Ateneo University and Adventist University of The Philippines), and Jerusalem, Israel (Albright Institute of Archaeological Research). But she especially loved England with its small quaint villages and tremendous sense of history and culture, stopping many times as she traveled for tea and scones or just to take in the idea of being there.
Denise had a great sense of humour, a strong sense of commitment, and was the life and soul of many groups in her church, university, book club, swimming group, and family. What will we do without her?!
Denise is survived by her husband Larry Herr, son Garrick Herr (Stephanie), sisters Dana Waters and Debbie Dick, cousin Joanie Percibali, and nieces Lauren (Waters) Saley and Liane (Waters) Wilson.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Denise’s life will be held at the College Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2024 (livestream link located below). A Memorial Reception will follow.
Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to A Better World.
