ELLENS, Bouwinus (Ray)
Ray Ellens was called home, quietly in his sleep, to be with his Lord and Saviour on Monday, January 1, 2024, in his 89th year, at St. Peter’s Hospital, Hamilton.
Dearly beloved husband of Agnes (née Zietsma) for 60 years. Loving father of Kim and ƗTom Bouwman, ƗKaren Ellens, Colin and Marcia Ellens, Krista and Jim Mills, and Cameron and Natalie Ellens. Cherished Opa of Justin (Leah) Bouwman, Chris (Elyse) Bouwman, Calvin (Renee) Bouwman, Morgan Bouwman, Stefan (River) Bouwman, Jordan Ellens, Austin Ellens, Jaxson Ellens, Sutton Ellens, and Lincoln Ellens. Adored great-grandfather of Brock, Sierra, Samantha, William, Milo and Kira Bouwman.
Dear brother of ƗJohannes Ellens, ƗRiemke Wouthuis, ƗGeertje Huberts, Kina Soldaat, ƗLuke Ellens, and ƗTrudy VanSteinvoorn and brother-in-law of Nel Buisman, Charlie Zietsma, Helen Wanders, Tom Zietsma and Fred Zietsma.
Ray was born in Hoogkeerk, Groningen, The Netherlands in 1935, the youngest of seven children. After a short stint in the Dutch army, he made his way to Canada in 1956 where he spent his working years as an auto mechanic and a teacher. He was a man of quiet faith and strong convictions, and raised his family with Agnes with a loving but firm hand. He was a prolific storyteller, especially anecdotes about his childhood and growing up in the war years. His sense of humour was second to none and if you weren’t sure if he was joking, you just had to look for that signature twinkle in those baby blue eyes.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. at VINEYARD CANADIAN REFORMED CHURCH, 4628 John Street, Beamsville, where a Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Mt. Osborne Cemetery, Beamsville. If desired, donations to the Canadian Reformed World Relief Fund or EduDeo would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
