Doreen Kry (nee Thorpe) was born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England on September 14, 1931 to father Benjamin Thorpe and mother Annie (Gowton). She married on September 26, 1967 in Vancouver, BC. Peter Kry predeceased her in March, 2011.
She and Peter were avid members and supporters of the Good Sam Club, and a highlight trip was taking their camper and being part of a caravan with the group to Alaska. Doreen was an inveterate walker and believed in the benefits of physical activity and natural herbs for her health. She had a fondness for the mountains. They had their first impression on her when she saw them from a window in the Palliser Hotel in 1957 while working there. She arrived in Calgary from Toronto. She had emigrated with her lifelong friend Joyce Arsenault from the UK, and they stopped for a few months in Toronto before deciding to try the West.
Doreen and Peter did not have children, but she was always thoughtful of nieces’ and nephews’ birthdays and eventually those of grandnieces and nephews.
After Peter’s death on 19 March 2011, dementia slowly took hold of Doreen and the family is grateful for the wonderful home care she received initially and then more complete care at Wentworth Manor and eventually Mayfair Care Centre.
Doreen was a gentle person who accepted all those around her and found the good in them.
A Memorial Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, December 29, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. Please bring memories of Doreen to share. Condolences may be sent to Doreen’s family at www.mhfh.com.
