Obituary For Vera Elizabeth “Betty” Young
Betty was born in Spirit River, AB on February 27, 1935 to Arthur and Vera Traplin. They named her Vera Elizabeth, but everyone called her Betty.
Betty passed away suddenly on December 18, 2023, at the Central Peace Health Complex in Spirit River, AB at the age of 88 years.
Betty was the middle child of a family of five. She spent her childhood and adolescence growing up on the family farm in Happy Valley. That was, until she met and married a handsome young man named “Frank” and they went to start their own farm and family north of Spirit River. It was here, in addition to cows, horses, pigs and chickens, that they also raised 10 beautiful and healthy children.
Betty had many interests over the years as one might expect when you have put in 88-plus years. They include but are not limited to curling, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, travel, golf, horseback riding, jigsaw puzzles, crocheting and photography. Her favorite pastime in her later years was to “go for a drive”. She would take her camera then drive around in the rural areas hoping to spot animals. She always kept count of how many she had seen, and continued to do so up until about a year ago. Bingo at the Lodge was another thing she really enjoyed, always keeping her bingo money separate from any other change so she could always see how she was doing.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, two husbands: Charles Frances Keown (Frank) and Lawrence Arvid Young, as well as her oldest sister, Sarah Walker and a son, Richard Jackson Keown.
Betty is survived by her nine remaining children and their spouses: Judith Carr, Joan Singer, Janice Manzulenko, Lorraine Keown, Connie Matijevich, Shirlee Deley, Sharon Neault, Ron Keown, and Diane Knoblauch. She is also survived by her siblings: Thelma (Telly) Keown, Cam Traplin, and John Traplin. Betty also leaves her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, of which there are many.
The family would like to extend a very special Thank You to the staff at the Pleasantview Lodge in Spirit River as well as the Home Care staff. You all made her life so much better by being there.
The family has decided not to hold a celebration of life at this time but will have a “Family Memories Day” in the future.
Should anyone wish to make a donation in Betty’s name, please forward it to a senior facility of your choosing.
Care entrusted to Bear Creek Funeral Home, Grande Prairie.
