It is with deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved Doreen, daughter of the late Margaret (n. Jack) and Gordon Smith of Englehart, Ont. Loved and greatly missed by her husband of 56 years, Michael and their daughters Michelle (Jason Farr) of Cochrane and Tammy (Brent Smith) of Sturgeon Falls. Loving and proud Nana to Eric, Riley, Zachary, Kevin, Noah and Madison. Sister to Joan, Beatrice (late Gordon), Ileen, late Donald (Marlene), Robert, late Ernest, late Edward, Shirley, Brian and Wayne (Arlene). Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, that she cared for as though they were her own. Doreen had an open-door policy, and all were welcomed with open arms, making you part of her family. She was a second Mom and Nana to many.
Doreen grew up on the family farm surrounded by brothers, sisters and cousins. Often sharing memories of carrying water or picking berries with them as well as their adventures as a crew.
Doreen loved to quilt, sew and do crafts. This love of crafting and Mike’s entrepreneurship led them on a few business adventures, allowing Doreen time to be a mom to their daughters and do her favourite things. She always stood by Mike’s side from coaching the hockey team in Calgary, to making chili for the baseball tournaments in Chamberlain, or helping with the broomball tournaments in Englehart. Sunday drives, especially in the fall, were her favourite. Stopping to take a picture of something in nature, to shopping at all the little outposts to having a pic nic in a little road side park. You would see her smiling as she watched Mike or the girls, and later on her grandbabies, throw in a line to see if they could catch a fish or just sit and watch the butterflies and look at the flowers.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the ambulance, attendants and the hospital staff at West Nipissing Hospital for the care they gave Doreen. As per her wishes, there will be no celebration of life services. Funeral arrangements in care of the Theoret-Bourgeois Funeral Home, Sturgeon Falls.
