Obituary
It is with great sadness we the family announce the passing of our beloved mother Mildred Coffey (nee Furey), of New Bridge, St. Mary’s Bay, on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the age of 82 years.
Predeceased by her husband Edgar Coffey (March 2023), her parents Ethel & Peter Furey, brothers Frank and Bernard Furey, parents-in-law Albert & Catherine Coffey and brothers-in-law Fred and Jim Coffey.
Leaving to mourn with loving memories are her 3 children: Edgar “Junior” Coffey (Irene Doody), of St. John’s; Jackie (Brian) Morrissey of Little Harbour, Nova Scotia; and Cathy (Joe) Gaudon of Mt. Pearl; her loving grandchildren: Jordan & Christopher McDonald, Alex Gaudon, Benjamin & Abygail Morrissey and Brooke & Skye Coffey, sister Mary Hanlon, brothers Peter Furey (Bernice) and Doug Furey (Marg); sisters-in-Law: Bridgett Strachan, Ellen Legace, Madonna Coffey and Mable McCarthy, brothers-in-law Martin Coffey (Maude) and Adrian Coffey (Lily) and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mom left her home in St. Joseph’s at the age of 16. She married Dad in 1963. They lived in St. John’s for many years before moving the family to Newbridge in 1972. Her and Dad opened up a Gas Bar and Convenience Store which they ran for over 20 years. This provided a great outlet for Mom to meet people – She never met a stranger.
To those who knew her, loved her. She was kind, loyal, funny and giving. Her smile would light up a room and comfort all those around her. While her kids were her pride and joy, most of all she treasured the gifts they each gave …her grandchildren.
Over the years she played Bingo and Darts. She loved to cook and ‘could put a taste on a rubber boot’. She enjoyed baking and trying new recipes she would share with friends. She enjoyed puzzles, diamond dots, reading and knitting. One of her past times was knitting dish cloths to give to her family and friends. Sundays were a day of rest and music. She loved listening to her `songs’. After the Convenience Store was closed her need to meet and greet was filled with weekly yard sales.
Mom was a devoted wife and stood by our Dad until the very end. Her short struggle with cancer was fought with strength and courage. We are at peace knowing she is now with Dad again. Their strength in married life will continue in the afterlife.
Thank you to the staff and residents at Westbury Estates; to Dr. Amanda Noftall who brought us comfort in the last few months; and to Jennifer Quinton, Community Health Nurse who helped us navigate this difficult time.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place at Mt Carmel Cemetery, Mount Carmel, S.M.B., on Friday November 24, 2023, at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers a donation in her memory may be made to a charity of choice.
