It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard on November 3rd at the age of 86 years. He is survived by his loving family Diane, Chad (Sirini), Kent (Lucy) and sisters Annie and Monique. He is predeceased by his parents (René and Jeanne) and sisters (Madeleine and Maggie). His many nephews and nieces both here and in Europe will miss his fine sense of humour and larger than life personality. His only grandson, Dylan will miss Papi tremendously and will forever remember the laughs shared with him.
Born in Épinal, France his life was filled with travel and excitement. After finishing high school, he joined the French army and during that time and employment with an oil company, spent time living in the Sahara desert. He then decided to immigrate to Canada where he began living with his second family (the Kisers) in Chatham, Ontario. A trip to northern Ontario resulted in him deciding to enrol at Lakehead University where he taught himself English and graduated Summa Cum Laude in a B.PhEd program. He was then hired to teach French in a number of school settings: Thunder Bay, Kapuskasing, Port Hope and ultimately Ottawa where he retired from teaching. During these years, he also successfully completed his B.Ed. And M.Ed. Countless students’ lives in elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools were touched by ‘Monsieur’ with his enthusiasm for learning and his booming, unique voice.
Bernard believed in the goodness of all people and his values and beliefs reflected how he lived. His kindness and open heart will continue to be a guiding principle for his family.
The family wishes to thank Raymond, the Timberwalk Retirement Community 3rd floor staff and the Elizabeth Bruyere Palliative Care team for the tender care they provided for Bernard.
“You will forever be in our right pockets.”
