Obituary of Atwood Churchill Meisner
MEISNER, Atwood Churchill – Age 101, of New Germany, Lunenburg Co., passed away on Monday, November 6th, in Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Building, Halifax, where he has been residing since the spring of 2023. Born in Stanley Section, he was a son of the late, Carmon Stephen and Bernice Ruth (Beck) Meisner.
Atwood was a decorated veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas in active duty as a military police officer. Following the war he returned home to New Germany, where along with his brother, they successfully established Meisner’s Poultry Farm and sold eggs for many years until eventually taken over by his son. He enjoyed traveling to many places with Phyllis, his loving wife of 72 years
He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 102, New Germany, where he received a life-time membership. He was also a member of the Hillcrest Masonic Lodge #93 and the Trinity Lutheran Church, New Germany.
Surviving is his daughter, Marilyn Hibbs, Nictaux Falls; son, Todd (Peggy) Meisner, New Germany; 7 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife; Phyllis May (Jodrey) Meisner; daughter, Cathy Meisner; sister, June Connell; brother, Carmon Meisner, Jr.; and Marilyn’s partner, Charlie.
Visitation for family and friends will be held 6:30 – 8 p.m., Monday, November, 13th, in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 4895 Highway 10, New Germany, and where a Masonic tribute service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Service with a Legion tribute will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, November 14th, in Trinity Lutheran Church, New Germany. Rev. Wilis Ott, officiating. A private family Interment will follow the service, in the church cemetery.
A heartfelt thanks from the family to the special ladies who so lovingly cared for Atwood in his home for many years and to the staff at Camp Hill for their excellent care in his final months.
Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society of Nova Scotia, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or Trinity Lutheran Church, New Germany.
