Obituary
Elton Crandall Bockus, born September 11, 1929 in Farnham, Quebec; passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on October 30, 2023 at Stratford, Ontario surrounded by his family. A dedicated family man, Cran is survived by his wife Mary Camilla Bockus (nee Dawson); daughters Nancy (Fred) Brayton, Jennifer (Chris) Brown, Carrie; grandchildren Rebecca, Emily (Alex); Jordan (Cass), Daniel (Sam), and Curtis; great grandchildren Remington and Montgomery (Jordan & Cass), Evelyn (Daniel & Sam); sister Linda Jill Aiken and brother-in-law Brian MacFarland. Predeceased by his parents Elton “Babe” Bockus, Carrie “Dolly” Marion Margaret Bockus (nee Crandall); sister Beverley Elizabeth Peak; brother Reverend Canon Ian Lawrence Bockus.
A graduate of Bishop’s University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Cran was a lifelong educator.
He taught history and English at a variety of Quebec high schools (Noranda, Hudson, Beaconsfield). He then “taught teachers how to teach” at MacDonald College and later was professor and Dean of Students at McGill University’s Faculty of Education. Cran loved sharing his deep well of knowledge on a variety of subjects – history was his great love as well as theatre, music, traveling and gardening. In his retirement, he and his wife Mary ran a successful bed & breakfast in Stratford for almost 30 years, built schools in Guatemala and helped establish the Stratford Perth Museum. A devout Habs fan with a quick wit and a kind heart, Cran was never too busy for a lecture on the War of 1812 or troll hunting with his grandkids.
Celebration of life to be held at St James Anglican Church, 41 Mornington Street, Stratford on November 4, 2023 at 10:30 am with visitation prior to the service starting at 9:30 am.
