Obituary
With great sadness, the Stewart Family announces the passing of our beloved father, Glen Roger Stewart Sr. at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing (Saint John), on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
Dad was well known throughout the Oromocto and Saint John communities; everyone he met admired, respected, and loved him. He was a very genuine, caring, affectionate man that made everyone feel welcome with his charm, sarcastic wit, and endless supply of ‘hugs’. He was known by many as Papa Stew and always had pocket mints to share. His 83 years of life experience made him a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ as he used to say. He was a skilled carpenter, a mechanic, a farmer, and a business entrepreneur (Oromocto Sports & Equipment); it was his many experiences as a young man in the navy that would shape his life skills, instill his ‘drive’ and self discipline, and which then would provide so many of the stories he would often tell to teach life’s lessons. There was nothing more important to Glen than family and friends.
Glen was born on August 22, 1940, in the family home at Red Point, Prince Edward Island, the youngest of six children. He was raised on the family farm where he attended a one room schoolhouse with his siblings until he joined the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in 1957.Originally stationed aboard HMCS Iroquois, he was later deployed to HMCS Hochelaga in Quebec City, where he soon met and fell in love with his future wife, Barbara Ann Theresa Pike. In 1962 he married Barbara, left the RCN, joined the Steinberg grocery store chainand immediately started his family. In 1967, Glen moved to Steinberg’s first New Brunswick location in Oromocto where he became store manager.
Glen raised his family in Oromocto and soon became heavily involved with the Royal Canadian Legion, first as Branch President, then NB Provincial Command President. In 1986, Glen accepted the position as NB Command Service Officer, Royal Canadian Legion(RCL) and he and Barbara relocated to Saint John. In addition to working with the RCL, he became the Manager of the Main Brace Naval Veterans Association. Sadly, Barbara passed away in 1995. Glen later met and married Cara Carr. Glen retired from the RCL NB Command in 2005.
Glen was predeceased by his wife Barbara Ann Theresa (Pike), parents Helen and Nelson Stewart; siblings Eldon, Jean, Ira and Arthur; grandson Brett McCormick; brothers-in-law Preston Coffin, Ed (Smokey) Jones, his Quebec brothers-in-law Billy, Stanley, David and Harry Pike, sister in law’s Mary Lapointe and Joan Stewart, niece Carol Giles and nephew Dean Stewart.
Glen is survived by his children Glen (Karen), Gary (Kim), Greg (Sabrina), Kelly; his sister Karolyn(Jones); his sister-in-law Linda (Pike) Smith; brother-in-law Earl Pike (Louise); his sisters-in-law Anne Stewart, Nora Stewart; grandchildren Michael (Laura), Adam, Molly (Mike), Jack (Ellie), Luke, Cody, Bradley, Brooklyn, Shaylee, Lily, Georgia, Charlotte, Henry; great grandchildren Maria, Winnie and soon to arrive ‘Molly & Mike’s baby girl ’; his estranged wife Cara and her children Jenna, Aaron, and Cody; special in laws Wendy Stewart, Michelle Stewart, Dean Jonesand Vanessa Owens; as well as many nieces and nephews and many extended ‘family friends’.
The family will have a private interment service followed by a public Celebration of Life on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 69, 714 Wilson St, Saint John (West), NB E2M 3V2.
A very special thank you to the staff at Ridgewood Veterans Wing – Victory Lane. Your kindness, love and compassion was so very much appreciated!
