Obituary
Vincent, Leah Blanche. Born August 29, 1935, passed away October 16, 2023. Blanche was born to Thomas and Katherine Roper, and proud to be considered a daughter of Basil Jarvis. Her Aunt Sylvie had a big impact on her life. She grew up in New Glasgow and graduated from New Glasgow High School, in 1953. As the Vice President of her graduating class, she was always a champion of the underdog. A trait that that she demonstrated throughout her life.
Blanche moved to Halifax and enrolled at the VG Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1956 and married Ken in 1957. Their marriage endured for 66 years. Wayne was born in 1958, and Jane in 1960. In 1966 Blanche and Ken moved to Moncton, where they have remained for 58 years. Ken was on the road so Blanche was the parent that drove everyone to Junior Choir and Messengers and Cubs and Hockey and CGIT and Basketball and Field Hockey and Football. She may not have understood the games, but she was always there for support. She became active at First Baptist Church with the Messengers and Group Committee, but the thing she was most proud of was the work she and Ken did with the Baptist High Fellowship in the 70’s. Many of those people are now in their 70’s but she still considered them the young people.
She worked for a few years in Dr Boillat and Dr Messenger’s office giving herself a chance to help those in the community. She let her certification lapse for her nursing, but in the 80’s she spent the time studying and writing the exams to recertify. That opened up a new group of young people that she could mentor and support as she became the school nurse for the Atlantic Baptist College. She has continued to stay in touch with some of those students until now.
Ken and Blanche loved to camp. It began in the 60’s with the station wagon and the tent, moved to a camper in the 70’s and then to an Argosy trailer in the mid 70’s. She and Ken did some travelling in the 80’s and 90’s, in Europe and in the Southern US, but most often to see their grandchildren in BC. She liked to see her NS family whether up to visit or passing through on the way to a soccer game.
Blanche worked hard to create awareness for ALS in the Moncton area. She supported the Women’s Missionary Society and IODE, and always enjoyed the lunches. She developed a passion for cross stitch and needlework as a member of the Chickadee Chapter. She loved to travel with that group, looking for new ideas, training on new techniques and filling her home with samples of her work. She continued to hold her family to a high standard and want the best for all of them.
She is survived by her husband Ken, son Wayne (Heather), daughter Jane (Geoff) and grandchildren, Emily, Ethan, Anna, Theo, Paige and Mikailee.
A Celebration of Blanche’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Blanche’s name may be made to Crandall University in Moncton. Blanche’s arrangements under the professional care of Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Rd. Moncton (506-858-1995). Online condolences for the family can be made online at
