Obituary of James Joseph Glazebrook
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Joseph “Red” Glazebrook,75,of Ferguson’s Cove, NS, was surrounded by his immediate family; he passed away peacefully on October 11, 2023, under the care of the staff of QEII in Halifax, NS. Jim was born on February 3, 1948, in Halifax to the late Joseph Redmond Glazebrook of Halifax and Lucy Ann Glazebrook (O’Brien) of Cape Broyle, Newfoundland.
Jim attended and graduated from St. Pat’s High School in 1964, completing his
undergraduate and Bachelor of Education degrees from St. Mary’s University. Jim was a
dedicated educator, teaching students at St. Catherine’s, BC Silver, Rockingstone, and Cunard before retiring from J.L Ilsley, the school where his teaching career began 32 years earlier. Jim’s lessons went far beyond the classroom, in his earlier years he spent his spare time coaching minor hockey, running summer hockey camps and leagues that helped to develop young hockey players. Jim always had time for friends and former students who wanted to chat or need help.
Jim was a respected community member who volunteered in many ways. In January 2023 he
was awarded The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award which honored his countless hours of
volunteer work, including executive roles with Chebucto Minor Hockey and being an active
board member of the Spryfiled Lion’s Rink.
In his youth, Jim enjoyed playing football, baseball, and hockey. It was through teaching and
sport that he made lifelong friendships. If you had the pleasure of being a friend, colleague,
student, or acquaintance of Jim’s, then you experienced his gift for the gab. As an avid
reader, he was wise and insightful and could always be trusted to keep you updated with what was happening around the world or to amuse you with one of his many stories.
Jim will be lovingly missed and remembered by his wife and best friend of 51 years, Sharon
Glazebrook (Tunis); sons, Ja-red (Andrea), and Jacob; beloved grandchildren, Lucie and
Landon; sister, Sandra Tufts; brother-in-law, Scott Tunis (Deborah); sister-in-law, Tanya Tunis; niece, Heather Jewers (Rob), and many other friends and family members far and wide.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Herring Cove Volunteer Fire Department for
their dedicated service to the Community and the family.
Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to Dalhousie Medical School and J.Albert
Walker Funeral Homes. As per Jim’s wishes, there will be no service. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date in his beloved garden.
Jim’s love of children and sports was strong; donations may be made to any Minor Sports
an organization that could help disadvantaged youth become involved.
