Gillian Margaret Baker (nee Wright) was called home to be with her Lord and Saviour on October 8th, 2023, Thanksgiving Sunday.
Born July 27th 1936 in Great Missenden, England, Gillian was the eldest daughter of Donald and Margaret Wright. Gillian grew up in Great Missenden with her four siblings and many beloved cousins and friends.
She married Geoffrey Baker in 1962 and had three daughters. In 1974, they immigrated to Canada, putting down roots in Burlington, but moved several times throughout the years to Edmonton, England, and California.
With each transition Gillian developed lasting friendships and opportunities to serve within the church and community. She also enjoyed many sports and hobbies, including walking, curling, badminton, boxing, table tennis, piano, knitting, and baking.
In 2000, Gillian and Geoff retired in Seeley’s Bay, building a home on the Rideau Canal where they provided their family with years of memories, celebrations, and holidays on the lake. Gillian maintained close relationships with her friends in the Burlington area and ultimately she and Geoff returned to the area in 2014 to be near to family and friends. Gillian enjoyed her time with the Rock Steady Boxing Club, YMCA, serving at the Youth Center in Waterdown, and the North of Fifty group at Compass Point Bible Church.
Gillian will be missed greatly by her husband Geoffrey, her daughters Helen, Elizabeth (Stewart), and Rosalyn (Rob), and her grandchildren Stephanie (Liam), Rebecca, Christopher, Abigail, Rachel, and Timothy. Predeceased by her brother Phillip (Val), Gillian was extremely close with her family in England and will be lovingly remembered by her siblings Judy (†Colin), Robert (Wendy), and David (Gill), sisters-in-law Val (†Graham) and Ruth (†Roger), and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Her honorary daughter Laura (Ian), grandchildren Kirsten (Kelly) and family, and Kieran (Aaron) will also miss her dearly. Gillian extended her love and care to anyone who entered her home, and her loss will be felt by many cherished friends.
Gillian’s family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff and spiritual care team at CAMA Woodlands Long Term Care Home for the exceptional care and support provided to Gillian and her loved ones.
A Funeral will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at COMPASS POINT BIBLE CHURCH, 1500 Kerns Road, Burlington, with a reception to follow. All are welcome. A livestream will be made available below under “Events”.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CAMA Woodlands Long Term Care Home (staff fund, in memory of Gillian Baker) and Camp Widjiitiwin (Muskoka Bible Centre, camp opportunity for youth).
