Obituary of Sadie Elliott
Elliott, Sadie
My wonderful aunt Sadie Elliott (née’ Bain) was the much-loved daughter of William and Annie Bain, was also adored by her big brother Martin (who was my father) and was great friends with Martin’s wife Jean & was their bridesmaid.
Sadie was brought up in London Road, Bridgeton, Glasgow and her parents lived there until they died. It was a beautiful well-kept sandstone tenement with gorgeous stained-glass windows and nothing like the tenements that were to be built later.
Sadie was a shining person whose innate goodness shone through for all to see and be drawn to. She was also fun, vivacious and with her sparkling wit & beautiful smile, was very popular BUT she was no pushover, she spoke out against injustice and was a fervent believer of equality long before it became ‘the norm’.
My first memory of Sadie was when I was three and I got a new kilt to wear that was itchy, but this lovely lady gave me an ice lolly and all was right with the world.
Sadie came over a few times when I was young, but it was as a young teenager and visiting Canada with my parents that I really got to know and love her. I was shy and not vivacious like Sadie but luckily she took to me and we got on like a house on fire.
Sadie had taught my lovely uncle George how to cook but I have fond memories of my aunt Sadie enjoying cooking when entertaining and uncle George mixing his famous cocktails, sharing lots of teasing and laughter. We were amazed – not that Sadie had a stunning outfit each evening, but that she had a different pair of glasses to go with each outfit! My mother was definitely envious.
Sadie came to Scotland a few more times and my parents went back to Canada a couple of times. I did not as I had a young family and a sick husband but since my teenage visit to Canada, Sadie and I wrote regularly exchanging news and putting the world to rights.
Sadie will leave a big hole in all our lives.
Sadie and her lovely husband George were blessed to have found each other and it was a blessing to be in their company. They always swam in the same direction in life, their love for each other absolutely equal. I miss them both. I’m so glad they are now together again.
~ Carol Fyfe, Sadie’s niece.
