On Monday, October 9, 2023, Ronald C. Dawson of London and Barrow Bay, in his 94th year, passed peacefully at Chapman House/Grey Bruce Hospice in Owen Sound. Predeceased (2014) by his devoted wife of 62 years, June Rose (née Craig). Son of the late FAM (Alec) and Viola Dawson of London. Much loved father of Craig Dawson (Kim), Dave Dawson, and Laurie Dawson-Pomeroy (Tom Hack). Proud Grandpa of Brett Dawson Pomeroy and Dylan Dawson. Special uncle to Kathy (Steve) Hellyer, and Wayne (Dale) Eichenberger. Long-time close friend of Dianne Cunningham. Predeceased by younger sister Mary Jane Eichenberger, brother-in-law Ike (Alan), and sister-in-law Grace Bishop. Survived by sister-in-law Bett Crawford and brother-in-law Don Bishop. Ron will be missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Ron was a First Lieutenant Canadian Fusiliers, City of London Regiment 1950 and Captain 4th Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment. He was the founder and president of the successful office interior planning design/contract office furniture company, R.C. Dawson Co. Ltd. Ron served the London community in many ways, including as President of the London Chamber of Commerce, and as a board member of University Hospital, London Regional Art Museum, Better Business Bureau, Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Club, Diabetes Canada, Junior Achievement, Ontario Trillium Foundation… to name just a few. His volunteer service was recognized by London & District Business Hall of Fame (Laureate 2001), Participation House (Laudable Londoners 2009) and most recently as a recipient of The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers (2021). He was considered a mentor, offering support, advice and encouragement for those younger than he to enter the worlds of business and of volunteer service.
Ron was noted for his prodigious memory and attention to detail, and loved to debate those details with Mary Jane whenever the situation arose. He enjoyed travelling the world with June, her sister Grace, and brother-in-law, Don Bishop. He spent many weekends, summers, and vacations at the family cottage in Barrow Bay, which became his permanent residence, surrounded by immediate and extended family.
Spending his final years in Barrow Bay, Ron was an avid fisherman, boater, boat builder, dog lover, gardener, feeder of birds and chipmunks, and story teller. His boat, aptly named ‘Finally’, was a labour of love, built by his own hand, piece-by-piece, at Barrow Bay. He enjoyed any and all social gatherings where he would command an audience with his many stories, usually of days gone by. He lived a long and full life and often declared “I’m happy every day that I get up in the morning”. His presence will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London where the funeral service will be conducted on Monday, October 16, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. A private Masonic Service under the auspices of St. John’s Lodge 209a will be conducted prior to the visitation.
