In Celebration of
Gerald Archibald Brown
August 26, 1941 –
October 7, 2023
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal.”
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Gerry at home, with his family at his side. With determination and courage, Gerry met his beastly disease head on, in his usual style, defying all the odds by enjoying four bonus years with family and friends. Gerry, aka “the Energizer bunny,” loved his family, was so proud of his children, and his treasured grandchildren’s accomplishments, passing on to them his strong work ethic.
Left behind, his greatest supporter and love of his life, his wife Barb. His children, Kimberly (Mike) Kelly and Kevin (Lisa) Brown, and his grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler Kelly and Abby Brown. His brothers, Ken (Bonnie) and Murray (late Elaine). Predeceased by his parents, Allan and Irene (nee McCready) Brown, his brother Gord (late Judy), and father and mother-in-law Tom and Jean Carr. Also survived by his sisters-in-law Ann Carr (late Keith), Marion Spicer, Barb Carr (late Bob), Judy and brother-in-law Peter Milne, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and great-nieces and nephews.
At the age of 19, Gerry began a fulfilling career at the Bank of Montreal, spanning 39 years in various positions and cities throughout Ontario. However, his real passion was his second career, as a real estate broker, using “Helping people is what I do” as his motto. Never one to pass up a challenge, he slid headlong into every problem and landed on his feet with a smile on his face; he was formidable and unafraid.
He worked hard and played with equal gusto, never forgetting his roots. His whole life has been an adventure, spending so much time with family and making so many friends along his journey. He and Barb’s large and close-knit families have always celebrated events, noisy and surrounded by food! Lots of gatherings at their “happy place,” the cottage, have been filed under ‘what happens at the cottage, stays at the cottage’. A trip to Peterborough Hospital ER, at least once a summer, became a usual occurrence, resulting from fun on the dock, fun on the deck or too much fun in the water. He followed his dreams, with Barb at his side for almost 55 years, considering themselves the luckiest people in the world.
Life is too short to wake up with regrets, so love the people who treat you right; forget about the one’s who don’t. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.
Special thanks to Dr. Garzon and Michelle, Dr. Lim and Dr. Dosani for their compassion and skill throughout this difficult journey. Thanks as well to all the nurses who helped provide comfort to Gerry. Thank you to all our family, friends, coworkers and our Palace community for your continued support and kindness.
Cremation has taken place. Join us to celebrate Gerry’s life at Turner and Porter “Peel” Chapel, 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga (Hwy 10 N of QEW) on Sunday, October 15th, from 1-5 p.m., with a service of remembrance beginning at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Trillium Health Partners.
