Obituary
O’Hara, Shawn
Shawn O’Hara of Azilda, Ontario, passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
Shawn was born in Owen Sound and grew up in Elmira, Ontario. He attended the Haileybury School of Mines, and his love of mining allowed him to live in various communities across Northern Ontario, making many friends along the way. In his younger years, Shawn was involved with mine rescue and was a volunteer firefighter. Shawn had a passion for cooking and entertaining, and nothing could top his prime rib! Guests were greeted at the door with a big grin, a handshake and a hug, and they left with full stomachs and sore cheeks from the laughs shared. He was just as enthusiastic about travelling, and his time spent abroad with family and friends is fondly remembered.
Shawn leaves behind some incredible young adults. They grew up sharing a love of adventure and travel with their dad. They also shared a love of watersports and boating from their time living on their favourite lake. Left to mourn with his children are his mother, Donna O’Hara (partner Merle Martin, predeceased) and sister, Caroline O’Hara (Reiner Meyer). Shawn was predeceased by his father, David O’Hara and grandparents, Lloyd and Lizzie Holtzhauer and Earl and Pauline O’Hara. He will be remembered by his aunts and uncles Gail (predeceased) and Ed Dennis, Joanne Shelley, Sandra and Clarence Aspden, Norman and Marlene Holtzhauer, and Jackie and Brian Rayner.
Shawn’s family knows that this is a shocking loss for many. He chose to end his life after a long struggle with addictions and mental health. The silent epidemic of suicide is catastrophic for those left to grieve. It is important that this is shared openly, and it is done with much love and respect for Shawn. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the first responders.
His wishes were for a casual celebration, which will be held at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 2 – 4 p.m. Casual dress is requested by his children.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Health Sciences North in Sudbury to support the Mental Health and Addictions Program, and can be made through the funeral home.
