Joan Marrs Hughes;
Reverend Joan Hughes passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 3, 2023 at Providence Care Hospital in Kingston Ontario at the age of 92. Although Joan was a proud Canadian, she never lost touch with her Scottish roots. Joan Marrs Baird (parents John and Maggie Baird) was born the youngest of 5 children in Greenock Scotland on March 3, 1931. Predeceased by her first husband William Kerr Galbraith Allan, Joan remarried Victor Augustine Hughes on September 11, 1970 (also deceased).
Joan is remembered by her children: Ken Allan (Tricia), Joanne Allan (Greg), Kitty Kerr (Andy) and Richard Hughes (Lindsay). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Joan was a passionate lifelong learner. She was in the inaugural class of the Early Childhood Education program at St Lawrence College. She went on to complete several degrees at Queen’s University (BA, B.Ed and M. Div). At age 60 she realized her dream, when she was appointed as an ordained Minister to Kingscourt United Church where she served the congregation for 5 years.
Joan was a very engaged member of the Kingston community. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the Cataraqui Conservation Authority, St. Andrew’s Society, the Rideau Trail, food security programs and the Elizabeth Fry Society. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to the staff at Providence Care Hospital for the excellent care that they provided to our mother.
The family welcomes guests for visitation on Saturday October 21, 2023 from 10:00am to 11:00am at Wartman Funeral Home Kingston, a service will take place in the funeral home’s chapel at 11:00am with a reception to follow.
