Robert “Bob”‘s Obituary
Robert Frank Coates, resident of Grimshaw passed away on September 29th at the age of 79 years, three weeks short of his 80th birthday.
Bob was born and raised in the Berwyn-Brownvale area and was the oldest grandson of Robert and Julie Coates and first grandson of Frank and Pearl Wald.
Bob loved to drive. In 1972 he bought his first truck hauling gravel and asphalt in southern Alberta. In the winter he expanded to working in the oil patch usually under Wald Bros Trucking.
In 1986 he sold his truck and took over as agent of the Grimshaw UFA. In 2000 he left and went back to driving truck. For several years he drove for LaPrairie Works, eventually becoming their gravel foreman. When that position ended the lure of truck driving pulled him back and he drove for Grimshaw Gravel until illness forced him to stop in 2018.
As a hobby he studied the Alberta Road Map and World Atlas. If you asked him about any place in Alberta, he could tell you where to go and how to get there.
In June of 2012 he was diagnosed with stage 3 Prostate cancer, but ran out of treatment options in the spring of 2022. Instead of bemoaning the fact, he said “It is what it is”, never once feeling sorry for himself, or asking “Why me?”. He fought hard but finally succumbed to the disease in the early morning hours of September 29th, with his children by his side.
Bob leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Judy of 58 years; His children Robert (Tammy), Christene Coates, Heather Guey, and David (Trevor); Grandchildren Kory Mundt, Doryen, Tyler, Brady Guey and Tristan Weiser. He also leaves behind three sisters Pearl Hofferd, Kay Coates, Janice (Glenn) Quick; and two brothers Ken (Pat) and Calvin (June), as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his grandparents Robert and Julia Coates, Frank and Pearl Wald; His parents Walter (Ike) and Eleanor Coates; Nieces Nicole Hofferd and JoAnne Knievel; and bestfriend Allan Coswell
He was a kind gentle man who believed in giving every person a chance.
Following cremation his Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 5th at 1:00 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Grimshaw with interment to follow at the Berwyn Cemetery.
