Obituary
Doreen Ann Lalonde, a beloved mother, grandmother, and community member, peacefully passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023, surrounded by her family. Born on Wednesday, November 15, 1933, in Selkirk, Manitoba, to Mary and Ed Balcaen, she moved to Winnipeg as a child.
Doreen’s journey led her through St. Mary’s Academy and into nursing. She became a Registered Nurse after completing the Misericordia Hospital nursing program and furthering her studies at the University of Saskatchewan.
On May 4, 1957, Doreen married Roger Lalonde, and together they raised five children in St. Victor, Saskatchewan. Doreen was a devout Catholic actively engaged in her church and community, dedicating herself to volunteering.
In 1975, she joined the Family Life Insurance Company as an underwriter, later moving to Calgary, Alberta, where she continued her career with Sovereign Life. She also served on the unemployment insurance board.
Doreen enjoyed traveling with Roger. They journeyed through Europe, the Americas, and Asia, creating cherished memories.
Doreen faced challenges with grace, humor, courage, and unwavering faith. She is survived by her children, Marc (Monique Denis), Marilou (Richard Oga), Jocelyne (Randal Smith), Angele (Gerard Testa), and Lise (Roger Towsley); along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Alice, Marilyn, Marie, Margaret, and Christine.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff and care aides at Providence Care Center for their exceptional support and kindness.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Calgary on Monday, October 2 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of life in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary at www.alzheimercalgary.ca/ in Doreen’s memory are appreciated.
May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her beloved Roger in the loving embrace of the Divine.
