Obituary
Peacefully on September 14th in her 90th year. Gloria was predeceased by the love of her life and husband of 65 years, Richard (Bert) Proud, in November 2022.
Born May 2nd, 1934, and raised in the village of Lakeview, Ontario (now Mississauga), Gloria was a free spirit and a tom boy. In the early 1940’s her parents bought property on Salerno (Devil’s) Lake in the Haliburton Highlands, and in the summers operated the All-Go fishing camp. She loved the freedom – to run, and swim and fish. In her teens, Gloria always had a car that her Uncle salvaged for her from the family’s auto-wrecking company. Years later at a dance in Brampton she met her future husband, Bert, and he negotiated a drive home in one of those cars. It was the beginning of a wonderful, loving, long life together. When she left high school, she worked at a bank in downtown Toronto, and used to look forward to Fridays. She could jump on a train at Union Station and go all the way to Kinmount, where her Dad would be waiting to make that short drive back to her favourite place – the lake. Gloria was one of two children born to William and Lily Lancaster (nee Crookes) and is survived by her brother Gerald (Jerry) Albert Lancaster.
Gloria and Bert also settled in Lakeview, where they married in 1957, built their family home, and raised their children. They retired to Lindsay, Ontario in 1995. Gloria loved babies and felt blessed again when she had her fourth, ten years after her first three. Our home was always open to the neighbourhood children and school friends. Halloween parties, birthday parties, and dance parties. There was always plenty of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Kool-Aid, soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, and enough dinner to go around. She might join in a game of Double-Dutch on the street in a fit of laughter or host a spontaneous neighbourhood collage- creation party in the carport on a rainy day. Gloria is survived by her sons Brett (Jacqueline), and Craig (Marnie), her daughter Michele Proud, and her son-in-law Michael Sampson. She continued to dearly love and truly missed her youngest daughter, Karen, who died of cancer in 2000 at the age of thirty-seven. She adored her seven grandchildren, Jordan (Meaghan), Tyler (Kelsey), Taylor, Lindsay (Victor), Keaton (Emily), Emma and Eric, and was so pleased to hold and hear news about her beautiful six great-grand children Beaudie, Olson, Jack, Islo, Nathan, and Rosie.
Gloria loved to chat and always worked part-time where she met many life-long friends. She volunteered at the local schools and later in life, at the local hospital. She could be found with her nose in a book, playing Euchre and Bridge, out in the boat fishing, or swimming. Later in life she took up golf, which Bert and her enjoyed together. She delighted in a hot cup of tea, sending best wishes and writing long letters to family and friends. Gloria lit up when she danced with Bert. They could dance for hours, floating on air, it was magic, and it was love.
Three generations later and we all gather often at her favourite place, Salerno Lake. We tell stories, we laugh, we play cards and games, and boat and fish and swim. But most of all, we enjoy each other’s company, and for that we truly thank you and love you Gloria – Mom, Nana, and Great-Grandma.
