Stephen’s Obituary
Stephen Dayneka passed away on August 22, 2023, after a good breakfast, his favorite meal of the day, at the Southbridge Nursing Home in Kemptville, Ontario, where he had lived the last year of his life. Stephen was born to parents from the Ukraine who ran a small corner store in the then immigrant neighborhood of Parkdale, Toronto, where he learned his street skills. He was the oldest of three children and the first to go to university. He impulsively chose dentistry as a career over architecture. Upon graduation from the University of Toronto School of Dentistry he met his partner and “love of his life”, Lesia Boyanowsky, who was in Toronto at college herself to marry a City boy to take her away from her remote hometown. They ended up back in Red Lake, Ontario, where he, with strict guidance from Lesia, his wife and office manager, ran a successful dental practice for over 50 years. They both ended up loving the Red Lake community.
Steve enjoyed sitting in the local coffee shops for hours exchanging political theories and history with the local bush pilots, miners, businessmen and trappers. He was a welcome member of the group except when he began boasting of the accomplishments of his four children and their families.
He is survived by: Leslie Dort (Joe), Natalie Dayneka (Bruce Webster), Andrew Dayneka (Janet Reid) and Mark Dayneka (Sheri Rowan Dayneka), 8 grandchildren Joseph S Dort (Tanya Puka), Malcolm Dort (Julie and their two children, Owen and Cameron), Erika Dort (Sergio Andaloro), Matthew Webster and Shannon Webster, Alex Dayneka-Hayes (Kirk Hayes and their daughter Austen), Jillian Newton (Ben Newton), and Stephen J Dayneka. In his opinion, they were all the most advanced and best at whatever they pursued. He will be missed by his sister-in-law, Vera Dayneka and his brother-in-law, Ehor Boyanowsky (Christina).
He would say that his greatest pleasure in life was his family and loved whenever one of the family returned home from university, brought their family, or visited later in life once he was a widower. He could captivate you with his stories of operas he had enjoyed, or British Humour such as Fawlty Towers, his face beaming as he recounted an aria or a particular skit. He loved the outdoors, exploring it in a canoe, a fishing boat, on a snowmobile or in his beloved float plane. He was an okay but not great pilot. His last flight ended in a crash; he managed to swim away intact. He did fly in dentistry with portable equipment visiting remote patients, he explored the Canadian north as far as the Hudson Bay but loved most of all fishing off the pontoons of his plane with a family member. His favourite uniform was a blue jean shirt with an oil stain, a pair of saggy jeans and a prized pilot’s cap.
Steve was a good carpenter, he built the home we grew up in, the cabin cruiser we spent countless weekends on exploring Red Lake or Gull Rock Lake, the cottage on McKenzie Island and the Pringle Lake Log cabin. Later in life he started building very solid furniture and carving exquisite scenes of the north. He would want to be remembered as a good dentist, a solid loving husband to Lesia and a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was brought to tears by his joy for his family. He will be missed by generations.
Service at a later date. A special thank you to the wonderful staff of Dahlia Wing at Southbridge Kemptville Nursing Home for their exceptional care and kindness to Steve.
