Obituary
With gratitude for his life, and deep sadness at our loss, the family of Ernest (Ernie) Gerald Peters announce his passing on August 27, 2023, at the age of 81.
Beloved husband to Laura, loving father to Greg (Suzanne), Chad (Nadine), and Lisa (Marc); the ultimate Grampie to Ethan, Emma, and Zachary; dear brother to Ralph (Shirley), Betty, Helen (Harold), Bertha (Tim), and Everett, caring Uncle to a number of nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Henry and Charlotte, brothers Earl and Harry, and nephew Trevor.
Ernie was employed by Sears Canada as Contractor/Service Manager for the Atlantic Region, retiring after 38 years of service. He was a tireless worker, a strategic planner, and respected colleague. He enjoyed carpentry in his spare time and completely renovated the family cottage, built an addition to his home and was always available to lend a hand to his children and his friends in their various building projects. He was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary church, lending his time and talents to the Environment Committee and as an Alter server, and a life member of Knights of Columbus #9270 working at various fundraising events.
Ernie enjoyed a brisk walk, barbequing pretty much anything, time with his family, making wine; his passion was golf. On any summer day, he could be found at Country Meadows Golf Club, walking up the 18th fairway, looking forward to going home to sit on the deck with a glass of merlot and a snack of crackers and cheese. In winter, he and Laura enjoyed being challenged by the golf courses in South Carolina. Ever open to new experiences, Ernie climbed Mount Katahdin for the first time on his 60th birthday, an event he intended to repeat at some time. Life was good.
Ernie was also very passionate about hockey and spent years volunteering with Lewisville Minor Hockey Association where he was spectator, coach, and mentor to many players. He also served on the executive for several years including a term as president of the association.
Dealing graciously with the symptoms of Lewy Body Dementia, he never lost his sense of humour or his love of life. He enjoyed visitors, recognized everyone, and rarely a day passed without friends stopping by. We are grateful to all who spent time with him.
We deeply appreciate the care provided to Ernie by the staff on 5200 at the Moncton Hospital and the staff of Monarch Hall where he spent his last days. We will never forget their genuine care and kindness to Ernie and to our family.
In respect of his wishes, Ernie’s body will be donated to medical science to help with further research on brain diseases.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Moncton Interdisciplinary Neurodegenerative Diseases (MIND) Clinic at The Moncton Hospital.
A celebration of Ernie’s life will be held on Friday September 1st at 11:00 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Fatima Drive, Riverview. Arrangements entrusted to Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (506-858-1995). Online condolences for the family can be shared at
