Obituary
CASEY, Patrick Ernest “Pat” – Surrounded by the love of his family, Patrick Ernest Casey passed away peacefully on Saturday August 19th2023 at the age of 84. Loving husband of Stella. Proud father of children Kevin (Jennifer), Michael (Heather), Laura and predeceased by daughter Kendra. Adored stepfather of Susan and David (Belinda) Hyndman. Cherished Grandpa of Spencer, Parker and Mackenzie Casey, Stephanie and Robert Shaver. Pat is also survived by his siblings Eileen Righton (Bill), Marilyn Worthy (Bob), brothers-in-law Jim Paquette and Robert Lenart and sisters-in-law Irene and Marilyn Lenart. He is predeceased by siblings Joan, Ken, Donald (Yvonne), Gerald and Bobby.
As the 6th of eight children born to Irish gold miner father Samuel Casey and stay at home mother Mary Casey in Kirkland Lake, Pat learned the value of hard work and the dollar at a very young age. As a youngster, he went to the Saturday Market in Kirkland Lake to deliver produce with his wagon and earn a quarter or two. After school, he would run through the local beer gardens “hawking” the Northern News. At the Kirkland Lake Golf Course, he caddied and cleaned golf clubs to make a dollar and it was there that he honed his golf skills. As a founding partner of the Protectors Group and, in later years, working with the Assante team as a financial advisor and insurance representative, Pat put his clients’ best interests at the forefront of his business dealings and valued the relationships he had with both clients and coworkers for over 50 years.
Pat loved sports. In his youth, he was the Northern Ontario Junior Golf Champion for 5 years in a row. In his later years, he became a Life Member of the Kawartha Golf and Country Club where he challenged himself and befriended many other avid golfers. Pat’s first sports love was hockey. Sharpening his skating skills on the “slimes” in his hometown of Kirkland Lake and his hockey prowess in the Northern Ontario Hockey League, earned him the opportunity to play for the Peterborough Petes from 1956-59. His contributions as a Pete led to a hockey scholarship and an NCAA Hockey Championship win at Michigan Tech. He played on their hockey team for 4 years and was the team captain for two. Pat’s hockey excellence and contribution to the sport has been recognized with inductions into both the Michigan Tech and Kirkland Lake Hockey North Halls of Fame.
Pat’s first job after graduation was as a salesman for Acme Steel in Chicago where he earned $425/month and the use of a company car. In 1971, Pat made his home in Peterborough and returned to the Petes fold where he devoted 37 years to the team as a volunteer on their executive. In honour of his playing career with the Petes and his numerous contributions to the growth and development of the OHL, including the introduction of The Education Packages for all OHL players, Pat was awarded the league’s Milestone Award. In addition, in 2016, he received the Bill Long Award “in recognition of his distinguished service and outstanding contributions made to the OHL.” Pat continued to play oldtimers’ hockey well into his seventies with the Peterborough Relics, Petes Oldtimers and his Kirkland Lake buddies (XKL) travelling to many locations in Canada, the USA and Europe. The team mates still keep in touch recalling boyhood stories after 60 plus years!
Above all else, Pat was loyal to and loved his family. The memory of his smile, generosity and off-the-cuff jokes will remain with all who had the privilege to know this special man.
Pat and his loved ones are grateful for the excellent care provided by Dr. Mallory and the PRHC palliative care staff. Thanks also to the Central East Community Care Services team for their compassionate home support.
A Celebration of Pat’s Life will be held on Thursday, August 24th, 2023 from 1-4PM at HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE, 2510 Bensfort Road, Peterborough. Words of Remembrance will be shared at 2PM. In Pat’s honour donations may be made to the PRHC Foundation. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.highlandparkfuneralcentre.com
