Shirley Doreen Winstone, age 92, passed away peacefully August 2, 2023 at the Collingwood hospital. Born in Welland November 11, 1930, she was the daughter of Blanche (White) and Louis Whitaker.
Shirley married William John Winstone, and they are survived by three children: Diane Winstone, Nancy (Robert) Hall and Trent (Lorna) Winstone, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is lovingly known as “Mom,” “Nana,” and “Old Nana” – one generation after the other. Shirley is also survived by two brothers Jerry (Lin) Whitaker and David (Paula) Whitaker, and predeceased by two brothers Louis (Sheila) Whitaker and Jim Whitaker.
Shirley lived happily in Fonthill most of her adult life. She was a member of the Paddle Tennis Club, a very enthusiastic contract bridge player, and was committed to teaching children and adults to play the piano. Sharing her love for music gave her much pleasure, and she continued with one student even at age 92. Baking was also a passion. Her fruit pies and chocolate chip cookies are famous with family and friends, and she shared them generously. Shirley and John moved to Collingwood November 2021.
Shirley is a loving, thoughtful, generous and humorous lady. She is loved by one and all. We are richer for having known her and will miss her deeply.
Visitation will take place Tuesday August 15th at the Pelham Funeral home from 11am – 1 pm. Burial for immediate family only, will follow.
If you would like to make a donation in Shirley’s name, please do so to the Collingwood General & Marnie Hospital, or to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
