Obituary
O’GRADY, JANE ST. CLAIR
It is with sadness in our hearts that we are sharing that our most beloved Mother, Jane St. Clair O’Grady, has passed away aged 78 on 19th July 2023.
In memory of our most beloved Mother, Jane St. Clair O’Grady (nee White) who passed away peacefully on July 19, 2023, in the manner she chose, tenderly, and surrounded by love. Adored daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth (nee Brown) White of Peterborough. Pre-deceased by her husband Timothy John O’Grady, who loved her with open affection and joy. And by her sister and closest friend Mary. Left to mourn are her children: Gillian and James (Lawson and Cadell Wallace), Christine and Richard (Devon and Jonah Gough), and Stephen (Cody and Jacob Painter). She will be dearly missed by her stepsons Mike (Cathy), Tim and Stephen; and Landry nephews Greg (Christina), Chris (Heather), John (Cathy), Barry (Lorna), Richard (Jennifer), Roger (Laurie), their children; as well as her many cherished friends.
Jane was born at Saint Joseph’s General Hospital in Peterborough to parents Elizabeth and Anthony White. Her mother came from Bells Hill, Lancashire, Scotland, and father from Kitchener, Ontario.
Attending Immaculate Conception Primary, Jane was a clever one, moving up a year very early in school, excelling in her studies, an insatiable quest for knowledge and understanding that continued throughout her life. She self-described herself as a tomboy, recalling that her parents and sister Mary encouraged her playfulness. Her early years spent at her family’s cottage and summer camps fostered her love of the outdoors: swimming, games, campfire sing-alongs and the lifelong friendships made.
Graduating Grade 13 at Peterborough C & VS in 1964, Jane continued her post-secondary studies and graduated as a registered technician in radiography in 1966. Married that same year, she moved to New Westminster, BC in 1968, lived briefly in Cranbrook, before settling in Chilliwack in 1973 to raise her family.
While working part-time and raising her children, she continued her passion for learning and exploring. Teaching herself to play piano, volunteering in the community, and visiting the many beautiful parks and beaches along the west coast of BC. She contributed to the local tv station where she volunteered as a producer for Brain Scramble, a televised school quiz show. She exercised her artistic side in tap dancing. For over 13 years she gave her time and energy to both the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. Providing leadership and mentoring, sharing in adventures, and creating lifelong memories and relationships to all she met.
She made many friends while working as an X-Ray technician at the Chilliwack General Hospital until her retirement and marriage to Tim in August 2005. The serendipitous reconnection with her high-school sweetheart brought Jane back home to Peterborough, reconnecting with her family and childhood friends. Jane joined a synchronised swimming team with her sister, always excited about practicing new routines and competing at events. She enjoyed spending time with her sister Mary: researching their family history and travelling to their ancestral home in Scotland.
Jane’s love touched so many lives, she listened without judgement. She was accepting, selfless and ever present, always there to support her family and friends through their troubles. We are so grateful for her love and lessons of humanity, humility and having fun.
Our deepest gratitude to Hospice Peterborough, for their exceptional care and support, and Dr. Blake for his compassion and patience.
