KANE, Ruth Phyllis (nee Leblanc)
1950-2023
Ruth passed away peacefully on July 26th after a four year battle with cancer that she fought bravely with her family by her side.
Ruth was born June 18, 1950 in Hamilton, Ontario. She attended the Halifax School for the deaf for four years, and then the Amherst school for the deaf for eight years, later attended vocational school for two years. Ruth loved cooking and baking and celebrating holidays and special occasions with family and friends. Ruth’s favourite time of year was the Christmas season, and always looked forward to the house being decorated with lights, these celebrations often included a visit from brother Percy with whom Ruth shared a special bond.
An avid quilter, she loved spending hours making beautiful homemade quilts. Ruth was known and loved by all for being kind, generous and a lifelong friend to many in deaf community. For many years she looked forward to and attending the Eastern Bowling Association of the Deaf Annual Tournament and Banquet, as she was a firm supporter of maintaining deaf culture and community.
Ruth will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 33 years Michael Kane and daughter Natalie (Scott). She is survived by her brother Wayne (Carol) Wedgeport, NS, sister-in-law Alice Leblanc, Hubbards Point.
She was predeceased by her parents Simon and Natalie (Doucette) Leblanc, first husband Edward Benham and brothers Lloyd and Percy.
The family would like to thank the oncology nursing staff at the Yarmouth Hospital, and a special thank you to Lynette with whom she formed a special bond. Also a thank you to the doctors and nursing staff at the Roseway Hospital for their exemplary care and compassion during her final days. The family would also like to thank Tammy Smith for interpreting services while Ruth went through chemo and follow up, your kindness was greatly appreciated.
Arrangements are under the care of Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. If desired, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Eastern Bowling Association of the Deaf would be greatly appreciated. A visitation will take place Sunday, July 30, 2023 at 6-8pm from Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. A Celebration of Ruth’s Life will take place Monday, July 31, 2023 at 11am from Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. On-line condolences may be left for the family at www.huskilson.net
