Frank Waldemar Benum Jr., affectionately known as “Frankie” to friends and “Papa” to his adored grandchildren, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2023. Born on December 24, 1940, in Lethbridge, Alberta, he was the son of Frank W. Benum Sr. and Irene Benum (nee Rice). His passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Frankie was a devoted big brother to his siblings, Bev, Terry, and Martin. Throughout their lives, he was a source of guidance, support, and love, which was at times expressed through his loving practical jokes.
Throughout his entire career, Frank worked at Moore Business Forms, where he forged lasting friendships with his colleagues. His commitment to his work was evident in his exemplary service and the respect he garnered from those around him.
Family was the cornerstone of Frank’s life, and he cherished every moment spent with his beloved wife, Kathryn Benum, who preceded him in death. As a loving father, he embraced his role with utmost devotion, nurturing a strong bond with his sons, Peter and James, who were also subjected to many of his practical jokes.
Frank’s true joy came from being “Papa” to his grandchildren: Jasmine, Phoebe, Christian, Andrew, and Emily. Their laughter and presence brightened his days, and he treasured the precious memories created with each of them. With his love, support, and selfless humour, he gave his grandchildren endless joy, and shaped them into the people they have become.
In addition to his dedication to family, Frank was known for his vibrant spirit and great sense of humour. His playful nature and practical jokes brought smiles to the faces of all who knew him. His warm heart and caring disposition endeared him to everyone he met, and he surrounded himself with friends who were like family.
Frankie’s passion for life extended beyond his home as he actively participated in various community activities. He was an avid curler, a valued member of the Probus Club, and a film enthusiast at the Cinema Club. His love for skiing brought joy to winters spent with his family at the Beaver Valley Ski Club.
Retirement brought him new adventures, including hiking, snowshoeing, and the art of bottling wine. Summers were spent at the cottage on Kahshe Lake in Muskoka, creating cherished memories with family and friends.
Despite some health challenges Frank’s sense of humour remained intact, thanks to the constant companionship and care provided by his dedicated caregiver and dear friend, Karen Monaghan. Their laughter and camaraderie brightened each day, making each moment special.
Frank’s adventurous spirit took him on journeys around the world, from New Zealand to South Africa, Europe, and Norway—reconnecting with his ancestral roots.
Frank’s impact on the lives he touched will never be forgotten. His love, laughter, and genuine kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
He will be forever missed by his siblings, sons, grandchildren, and daughters-in-law, Kathleen and Melissa.
A Celebration of Life will be arranged by the family at a later date to honour Frank’s memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario in Frank’s name.
Rest in eternal peace, dear Frankie. Your legacy of love and laughter will forever be cherished.
