Jean Martell, 79,
of Fredericton, NB, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023 at the Dr.
Everett Chalmers Regional
Hospital.
Born in Bath, NB, Jean was a Fredericton resident for
almost all of her adult life. Jean had been retired since 2012 after
working more than 35 years for the Province of New Brunswick, and
several years in the banking industry prior to that. Jean loved her
family, spending time in her beautiful backyard, her cats, shopping
for a good deal, and travel. She was a survivor of
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and had been cancer-free since 2007
– until very recently. Her cancer returned with a vengeance,
and she battled it on her own
terms.
Daughter of the late Howard and Barbara (Laing)
Tompkins, Jean is survived by her loving husband of over 58 years,
Andrew Martell; sons Timothy (Jennifer) Martell of Princeton, NJ and
Duncan (China) Martell of Calgary, AB; grandsons Keegan Martell of
Victoria, BC and William Martell of Calgary, AB; brother Clayton
(Judy) Tompkins of Arborg, MB; sister-in-law Mary (the late
Christopher) Loomer of Victoria, BC; and several nieces and nephews.
Jean was pre-deceased by her brother Max of McAdam, NB and
brother-in-law Richard (the late Dianne) Martell of Greenwood,
NS.
No funeral or visitation is immediately planned. The
family will notify friends and family in the future when a memorial
celebration is scheduled. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make
memorial contributions are encouraged to direct those in
Jean’s memory to the Oromocto SPCA (www.oromoctospca.com).
