Born November 4,1927 Jean Mary (England) Sutcliffe was born in Sheffield and grew up during the depression and 2nd World War. After completing her A levels at the age of 16 she had to go to work to support her family because her father had MS and was unable to work.
An only child, she married Charles Keith Sutcliffe (predeceased her in 1989). They are survived by their children Jane, Charles, Felicity, Gillian, Philippa, Penelope, Nicola and Melanie, Grandchildren Cate, Ben, Alex, Owen, Jeremy,David, Jacob, Heather, Sarah F,Laura, Jay, Sam, Tom , Sarah D, Megan and great grandchildren Tehm, Arya, Etta, Leo, Zeke, Maebh, Evonne, Nia, and Sylvia.
They emigrated to Canada in 1966 with their 8th child on the way and became active members of the Brockville community. Jean was the office manager for Keith’s medical practice and in her “spare” time enthusiastically supported her children’s hobbies. She welcomed many of their friends into her home for meals or months if the need arose. She was a hardworking member of Maycourt and enthusiastic fundraiser for many causes, especially the Brockville Public Library, the NDP and the Cardiac Rehabilitation programme at BGH. She was a generous hostess who opened her home for countless social and fundraising events. Her contributions to the community were recognized when she was made Senior Citizen of the year in 2014.
She was a supportive wife who joined in Keith’s hobbies such as Toronto Blue Jays, his hobby farms, horticulture and animal husbandry.
Jean was curious and interested in public affairs. She commenced studying for her BA from Queens University while raising her family and working full time, and graduated when she was a senior citizen. She belonged to 2 book clubs, studied conversational French, played Bridge and competed with her children and grandchildren at Wordle and the contestants of Jeopardy. She had hundreds of friends and could always be counted on if anyone needed a helping hand. She dropped everything to run and help babysit sick grandchildren, and was a 3rd parent to her grandsons Jay and Sam. Her remarkable journey came to a peaceful end on July 12 at the Brockville General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
In lieu of flowers, Donations to the Brockville Public Library or Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme at BGH would have tickled her pink.
