In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, New Finland in memory of Verna.
Verna Mabel Polvi (nee Huhtala) was born on December 29, 1932, on the Huhtala family farm, the third child of Walter & Senja Huhtala.
Verna attended New Finland School and later became study supervisor there in the years 1951-1953, as well as Carnoustie School for a few months in the spring of 1954. She taught Sunday school and went to Katepwa Bible Camp for two summers to Junior and Senior camp and also belonged to the Luther League.
Verna married Fred Polvi on July 17, 1954 in St. John’s Lutheran Church. They settled in the Carnoustie District where they farmed and raised six children. Verna was an active member of the LCW and Carnoustie Women’s Institute for many years. On the farm she always had a large garden and did a lot of canning and preserving. The coffee pot was always on and visitors knew they were always welcome.
After they retired to Rocanville in 1988, Verna had more time to pursue her hobbies. She especially enjoyed quilting. We have no idea how many she would have made but each of her children and grandchildren have at least one. She also enjoyed crafting, curling, camping, visits from family and friends and relaxing on the deck.
Verna & Fred celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2004. Fred passed away in 2005 and Verna continued to live in their house until her move to Sterling Manor in Moosomin in 2022. In January 2023 she moved to Moosomin Long Term Care, where she lived until her passing.
Verna was predeceased by her husband Fred, her parents Senja and Walter Huhtala, brother Willard, sisters Anita and Martha, numerous brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
Those left to mourn are: her children, Nancy Polvi, Terry (Jan) Polvi, Roger Polvi, Sandra (Ken) Selby, Tricia Polvi and Rhonda Polvi; grandchildren, Nichole, Aaron (Charissa), Jason (Shelley), Staci (Wade), Stephanie, Jeremy (Selena), Kali, Sam (Dustin), Keegan (Bobbi), Tyler (Jaimie), Skylar (Logan), Kendra (Shane), Sydney (Travis); great grandchildren, Nia, Walker, Braxton, Cash, Beckham, Sage, Dawson, Carson, Calder, Ryley, Harlyn, Ava, Maverick, Cohen, Luke and Cayden; sisters, Shirley Dean, Leila (Jack) Goods, brother, Wayne (Deb) Huhtala and brother-in-law Don Polvi. Verna will also be sadly missed by nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
Verna was and always will be a strong influence in our lives and we will miss her dearly.
