It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Phyllis Chatfield Pearl Milley , age 86, at the John M.Gray Centre, St. Anthony on January 10th, 2023
She is predeceased by her parents, Kenneth and Mae Taylor, sister Maud (Don)Burry, brothers Edmund and Lemuel Taylor, daughter-in-law Dale Hedderson.
Left to celebrate her life with many happy memories are her loving husband of 67 years, Carl;her children Lynette( Derek) Saunders, Donald(Leona and her children)Milley, Gregory( Judy) Milley, grandsons ;Curtis(Sarah) Saunders, Kyle ( Jessica),Kirk( Christina)and Scott Milley, granddaughter ;Nancy( Michael)Thomson, great granddaughters;Madeline and Rachel Saunders, sister ;Fayne(Joe) Buggy, brother; Glen( Barbara) Taylor, sister -in -law Millicent Taylor, also extended family members and many friends.
Pearl was born and grew up in Raleigh, Nl. After completing high school , she attended Teacher’s College in St. John’s and taught school in Raleigh and Great Brehat for 2 years. She married Carl , the love of her life, at the age of 19 and they made their home in St. Anthony. The focus of her life then shifted to being a full time homemaker, a devoted wife to Carl and a loving mother to their three children.
As time went by , Pearl returned to the workplace and spent many years teaching Sewing and Home Management at the Vocational School in St. Anthony, and later as a bank teller at Scotiabank, until her retirement at age 60.
Pearl was an excellent cook and baker and made sure nobody had an empty stomach. She loved having her grandchildren visit and would provide endless supplies of chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls. She was a tailor by name (Taylor)and by trade. A skilled seamstress, she was very well known in the area and much sought after for sewing wedding attire , particularly bridesmaid dresses and wedding gowns. She made all her own clothes, was ahead of her time in style and fashion, and always put effort into looking her best. Pearl had a quick wit and sense of humour and liked nothing better than hearing ( or telling ) a good joke.Laughter and fun came easy to her.
Pearl dearly loved her greenhouse and garden and was happiest as she would say “when I’m up to my eyes in dirt” Along with Carl, they cultivated beautiful flowers and an abundance of vegetables, which were shared generously with friends and neighbours. She also loved berrypicking, and spending time at the cabin down the bay.
Pearl’s kindness, loving heart ,generosity and devotion to her family will be remembered and cherished by us all forever.
The family would like to thank the staff at the John M.Gray Centre who took such good care of Pearl over the past year and a half.
