Hugh’s family is deeply saddened to announce that he died on June 21, 2023 at his home in Collingwood. Hugh lived for many years in Renfrew where his happiest times were spent painting with the “occasional” breaks to go golfing or fishing in the most remote lakes and rivers in the Valley with family and friends.
After his career with the Ottawa Senators was cut short by a diagnosis of early-onset Parkinsons, he continued to paint, fish, hang with his rescue dog Max and cheer for his Sens and Liverpool. And we all know that although he moved to be with family who supported him through his illness and treatments over the past 13 years, his heart was always in Renfrew.
At Hugh’s request, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. His ashes will be spread by family in Betws-y-Coed, North Wales, a place he loved dearly. He simply wants us to speak his name out loud and celebrate him with humour, appreciation of good art, acts of kindness and copious amounts of very good scotch!
Flowers are gratefully declined but donations in Hugh’s name to the Movement Disorder Clinic at Toronto Western Hospital, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, the Georgian Triangle Humane Society or Hospice Georgian Triangle would be very much appreciated. These organizations were extremely important to Hugh over the course of his journey.
Although we will miss him terribly, we wish him Godspeed and trust he has found his way to the peace and stillness he has craved for so long.
