It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Lowden Milligan, who slipped away peacefully with his sons at his side.
Jim was born in Calgary, Alberta. He was raised at the Ghost Dam and in Edmonton. When he was 17 years old, he travelled across Canada to attend the University of New Brunswick. He was a varsity basketball player and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1957. After returning to Calgary, Jim embraced his career as a geologist and began to leave his mark in the oil and gas industry. Jim’s work took him to four continents, including a stint in Mongolia. Regardless of where he was in the world, his passion remained with oil and gas rich Alberta.
Jim will be remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humour. He had a hard shell but was truly “one big softy”. Jim was kind, supportive, and generous. Whether it was a geologist fresh out of school, a family member, or friend in need, Jim was there 110%. He unfailingly gave more than he took—whether it be his time to others, or the last dollar in his pocket.
Jim served 54 consecutive years volunteering for the Calgary Stampede. Jim left his biggest mark on our community as a co-founder of the Calgary Bantam Football Association in 1964, bringing his enthusiasm for football to kids 12 to 15 years old. Jim loved sports, especially his beloved Edmonton Elks (Sorry Dad!) and the Edmonton Oilers. He was the last of his foursome who tore up the Turner Valley Golf and Country Club every weekend for many years.
Jim is survived by his two sons, Blair Milligan (Jacquie), and Jim Milligan Jr. He was gifted with four grandchildren, James, Connor, Madison and Mackenzie, all of whom he spoiled rotten, loved dearly, and worried about constantly. They were his world. Jim also leaves behind twelve nieces and nephews- “Everyone loved Uncle Jim”.
Go well Dad,
Rest in peace.
You’ve earned it.

  1. I was sorry to hear of Jim’s passing.  I met Jim near the end of his career when he was one of our part time consulting geologists.  Jim provided the critical evidence in our successful lawsuit vs one of the ‘majors’.   We had much in common with our luv of sports including Golf, Baseball, Football and both of us being former college basketball players, albeit several decades apart.  I was on the board at my golf course and Jim lent me a book he had found at a used book store written by Alistair MacKenzie 7 decades earlier that covered all aspects of golf course operations including club committees.  Most of which still applied except for encouraging rabbits because ‘they keep maintenance costs down’. The concept was correct, just better alternatives this century. We attended some local basketball games together including a high school tournament where the top player in the province was playing.  But the stories were not solely about sports, Jim regaled me with his stories growing up near U of A, time at Scurry-Rainbow to coaching.  And the time Jim spent volunteering at the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’.  A fellow golf course board member was Jim’s new stampede committee chairman.  As I remember it, Jim and his buddy had a system they had developed over the years.  The new committee chairman met Jim at our office and apparently tried to change the ‘system’ that had worked for years.  Then Jim comes to my office and I ask what he thinks, he is trying to be polite and I  finally say, the guy is a dufus.   Jim responds, he is a dufus but I didn’t want to say because I thought he was a friend of yours.
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
