It is with profound sadness that the family of Walter Joseph Crant Sr. (Walt to many) announces his passing on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at the age of 81. Walter left this world peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Born in St. Alban’s, NL on April 2, 1942, he was the eldest son of the late Charlie and Mary Crant. Left to mourn him are his soulmate and wife of 57 years, Joan (Mooring); children, Walter Jr., Crystal (Lonnie), Melinda (Chris), Bobby, all of Mulgrave; Kyle (Laura), Calgary, AB; grandchildren, Amber, Kale, Chad, Crissinda, Bryce, Mila, Brady, Victoria, Georgia, Charlotte, Grayson and Jax; great-grandchildren, Caden, Nova, Nash, Landon and Eliza; brothers, Gerard (Karen), St. Alban’s, NL; Albert (Doreen), Auld’s Cove; Anthony (Frances), Mulgrave; as well as a large cirle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Close neighbour, Denise Kinney spent her childhood in the Crant household and was like a daughter to Walt. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Charlie and his wife Jocelyn, John Willy and Robert David, all of St. Alban’s, NL.
Walt will be fondly remembered as a man of great character and kindness with an immense devotion to family. He will also be remembered as a respected member of the community, serving as a Volunteer Fire Fighter for 48 years, 10 of which he was Chief; a faithful member of the Anglican Church where he raised thousands of dollars through a recycling program which he started. He also worked for the Town of Mulgrave for 35 years, the last 25 as Town Superintendent and could always be counted on when a job needed to be done. He was known far and wide for his willingness to lend a helping hand and those hands never stopped.
Of the many things Walt loved, playing his accordion, being out in the woods or working on engines in his garage with cousin Mike. He loved being a husband, father and papa the most. His face lit with joy anytime one of his children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren were around.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday from St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Mulgrave with Rev. Susan Slater officiating. Burial will follow in St. Andrew’s Anglican Cemetery, Mulgrave. A reception will follow in the Mulgrave Fire Hall. Donations in Walt’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Words of comfort may be forwaded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
