Omer Emery, age 88, of Chatham peacefully passed away surrounded by his family at the Chatham-Kent Hospice, on Tuesday June 6, 2023. Beloved husband of 60 years to his best friend, Marianne (Waddick) Emery. Born in Chatham on December 31, 1934, son of the late Zoe Delanghe Emery (2016) and Harvey Emery (1949).
Loving father of John Emery, Diane (Philip) Mathia, Lisa (Americo) Todino and Mark Emery. Sadly missed by 10 grandchildren Jacqueline (Jeffrey Hull), Danielle & Brayden Mathia, Gabriela, Michael, Olivia & Zachary Todino, Matthew, Jacob & Joshua Emery and one great granddaughter Charlotte Danielle Hull. He is survived by his Aunt Laura Ruysseveldt, a sister-in-law Carol (Louis) Cuccia, and a brother-in-law Brian (Linda) Waddick. Caring uncle to many nieces and nephews and is cherished by many cousins.
Predeceased by an infant brother Oscar (1933) and a granddaughter Danielle Mathia (2015). Also, predeceased by his dear mother & father-in-laws Olive Denomy Waddick (2000) and Maurice Waddick (1993).
Omer was raised on a farm in Dover Township and later moved to Chatham. He worked for the Department of Highways and later worked as a Cost Accountant at Navistar International for 30 years, retiring in 1993. With his interest in farming, he continued to farm with his son, John, enjoyed gardening and was known for having the best, greenest lawn in the neighbourhood. Dad was a kind, generous, gentle man who treasured his faith, family and friends. He was known for his warm, beautiful smile. Dad also had a great affection for animals and especially his dog, Bart. Dad loved the game of baseball and played in a league in Grande Pointe as a teenager. Dad was a dedicated Detroit Tigers fan and spent many years cheering them on. Omer was a longtime parishioner of St. Ursula Church where he used his accounting skills as an offertory counter. He was also a member of the St. Ursula Knights of Columbus #9551. Omer’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Chatham-Kent Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
Friends and relatives may visit at Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home, 156 William St. S. Chatham (519-352-5120) on Friday June 9, 2023 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday June 10, 2023 at 10:00 AM in St. Ursula’s Church.
Burial will be in St. Philippe Cemetery Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Chatham-Kent Hospice or PAWR would be appreciated by the family.
